Speech delay without ASD

My DD,3.8,is non verbal, has had a barrage of tests, but with no outcome.ASD has been ruled out.
She has recently been seen by Dr Curran(AlderHey),a paed neuro & he says he sees 1-2 cases of this kind of severe speech delay a year.Just give her as much support as possible & she will hopefully develop some sort of speech by the age of 12Confused.
We have limited SALT,which has forced us to use a private SALT.But progress is very, very slow.

I feel very alone with regards to her speech delay & wondered if there were any of you out there with a similar story???

Just a couple of thoughts... (I have no SLT training, but am reasonably fluent signer.)

I can really relate to the frustrations of lack of spoken lang, ds is 4 with 6 words, we spent quite a few months signing to him before he started to produce back, but now he has 250+ signs and is making 3 and 4 sign sentences at times. Have had some 'interesting' experiences with education about his need for signing tho... Hmm

I was lead to believe that the bits of brain that are used with signing are different to those used for speech, (which was why signing works for my ds). Although there may be much more going on for the OP's dc of course.

OP I hope you get the support you need..

I don't want to highjack this thread but wondered if any of the other parents of signing kids wanted to be in contact?

signandsay ds was like that took 2 years plus to pick it up .He does have some speech now but needs his signing still to support what he is trying to say and then when cant un derstand him can tall him to sign

Were fortunat as had ican report that pointed out ds must be in a area where signing is used and his speech unit does use a lot of it so am very fortunate

i was told that the part of the brain is seperate too, but signing can often help to make pathways for speech

DD had an MRI last year, which, apart from a very small scar, which the paed neuro said was not significant enough to cause her specch delay, was clear.
She signs & vocalises quite a bit more at pre-school than at home, but the SALT said that is to be expected. At home it is a constant battle to get her to vocalise & the signing is rare.
I find it very frustrating as we seem to make a small step forward & then a couple of steps back.
We have only started with the private SALT about 4 months ago(can only afford a monthly visit),but she has made more progress than NHS SALT has in 2 years,so I think she is helpingConfused, but I do seem to be lacking in help on which doors to knock IYSWIM.
An ICAN assessment seems like the way forward,as even I don't truly understand my dd's problems & that breaks my heartSad.
All in all,the professionals seem at abit of a loss, especially the comm paed, they have all signed her off & wiil review her next sept.Obviously the SALT & physio is ongoing but the NHS SALT is 1 hour aweek shared with 3 other children who can talk & I had to fight for that.It makes me so angry & I don't know where to turn.
What should be my next move,I am reasonably happy with my private SALT,as dd has made progress with her.
Boboma will message you,I really need someone local to chat to & would really appreciate it!!

round the.... yeah it took him a while but now the signs are popping out of him, luckily his SLT is brill, (she is the ASD SLT, says he is very unusual as she has nver come across a kid with such a gap between signing and speech, but that is works for him, so that's what everyone has to go with!)

he is starting to get a (very) few more spoken words, we have added 2 in the last 6 months.

His LD means the language unit won't take him, but have managed to get statement that says TA with him must sign, (and better than him, no half-arsed handfull of signs!) and must translate his signs to assist his communication with other kids... looking at schools at the moment,

Hi everyone. Are any of you still around ? Any updates on your kids that were nonverbal 12 years on? My 4 year is is still non verbal I’m not sure he will ever speak. Thank you

Yes uses AAC. There are other ways to "speak"
Your child needs the means to communicate whether signs, PECS, AAC, etc
