DD2 who has ASD of some level but still being assessed. She W sits alot. I have told preschool she isnt allowed to sit like that and we try and discourge this at home but its habit forming.
I have asked for OT referal due to other motor issues but still waiting to hear back. Anyone been able to break this habit or found a helpful way of stopping it? She still has no hand preference, falls alot, struggles to hold a pen properly and tiptoe walks.
I have read some research which suggests hand preference and walking difficulties can be caused by longterm W sitting.
Any advice?

misdee - I just repeated the mantra - legs around. by the time she was in kindy/school - cross legs prevailed.

I too was wondering what W sitting meant, then I looked it up.

Then I tried it.

Ouch! Although I can see the stability thing, but wow it hurt my thigh muscles!

For those who are curious, take a look here

That's just a random link I pulled from Google, but it shows it very well in the diagram.

my dd is a w sitter - long sitting is hard but if you put legs into cross legged position it is quite a stable position. Also sitting on a small wedge - we have a wooden slope about 30cm and at about a 30 degree angle (like a writing slope) -this also helps to long sit or sit cross legged. The reason we need to discourage dd is that with her cp, she is at risk of hip dislocations and w sitting can make this worse. I spend a lot of time reminding dd to 'sit properly' - I have also been known to tell her 'stop w-sitting or your legs will fall off'. Grin
