Gp has always been very supportive etc and has been prescribing orange falvoured liquid melatonin for ds for several years. A few days ago I recived a call to sayt that the liquid was no longer available and he would have to go onto circadin tablets and crush them up instead. Not keen on this as ds has 8ml of melatonin and would need toc rush four 2mg tablets. Rang back to phramacy and they said they might be bale to get another flavour but had to speak to GP. Rang back to say GP has said we shouls top taking medicatio for a while and see what happens. What will happen is ds won't go to sleep and dp and I will have a bloody breakdown. What to do? Have got enough for weekend and am planning to see GP on Monday but really can't understand why they would suddenly withdraw it and also without any proper bloody consultation. Feel very upset it's kind of like the last straw I even started crying on phone to dispensary lady which is just not like me.

I agree, it doesn't seem fair that they are stopping it without seeing you. Is the manufacturer still making it? Has it gone up in price drastically?

Good luck, I hope you can get some sleep yourself and are feeling more like you soon Bear

He is an ignorant GP. Melatonin is not medication, it is a hormone that occurs naturally and there is some theory that people with ASD/SN do not produce it or use it in the same way as those who are NT (sorry, can't remember exact details). We have a brand called Kidnaps (har har) which is liquid but not orange flavoured. We get prescription direct from CAMHS or Paediatrician and collect at hospital pharmacy, we just sent an email when we need more. Maybe you could cut out the GP?

Yes I might have to. I'm really disappointed in him as he had seemed to be so understanding. I can't help thinking it is to do with cost. Apparently things like melatonin are called specials and are more expensive. I think he might be following some stupid directive from the PCT.

This seems crazy, what is the GP thinking of?!! I think that the GP's are only licensed to give one type of Melatonin. We use slow release and we get our prescription via the paediatrician or psychiatrist
