my son who is 4 and 1/2 has autism and is non verbal. over the last week his eating has slowed practically to a stop.

today he ate a wee drop of my porridge at breakfast (a few spoonfulls).

a boiled egg at lunchtime.

and nothing at tea time.

he is drinking ok.

he usually only moves his bowels once a week. (we have seen doctors, paed, paed nurse, who have checked him re this).

i keep trying him with various foods i know he likes or has eaten in the past, and with new stuff too.

he doesnt really feed himself, although will very occasionally pick up a bit of toast if he REALLY fancies it.

anyone had or have similar problems? and what to do about it? am beginning to get worried.

Hi
I'm not sure I have any useful advice, but thought I would reply anyway.
If he is happy to drink, do you think he would drink some kind of nutrition milkshake like Complan when his solid food intake is really low? Just for some peace of mind that he is getting some sustinance and nutrients? Maybe there are certain brands for children?

hi there, not got much advice for you sorry. Has he done it before? Is it maybe the smell thats putting him off? Does he have a real favourite food you could try tempting him with?

Is he poorly or coming down with something?

My DS is nearly 4 and has ASD too, he varies from being a terrible eater to an even worse one, but one thing we have found which helps are smoothies to drink - I buy one from ASDA as its more runny like Juice, but is an actual smoothie. Would this work?

Maybe he's poorly? You could take him to your GP just to get him checked over...

My ASD son used to go through this. He's 8 now but I remember him seeming to survive on soya milk (yes really!!) and banana's for what felt like weeks at a time!

Also worth keeping an eye on his fluid intake. If he fills up on liquids, it certainly won't help his appetite. But then again if he's hardly eating anything you may not want to stop him drinking something nutritious like milk.

Good luck and I'm sure it won't always be like this!

Is there a pattern of him eating more after he has done his weekly poo, then less as the days go on until the next poo?
