I finally have a appt with the SENCO teacher tomorrow at school about Statutory Assessment! Its only half an hour long which I hope they have allowed enough time!

Do they suggest what support they think my DS needs?

All I can say is take notes and get action points agreed. i.e. I will fill in this form and give it back to you by Fri.

Because I left a meeting with the SENCO thinking she was going to apply - but she never did.... (She was 'going to' - just not quite sure when :) )

Do you want school to submit the request or you?

For a statement?

Well I spoke to ly local Parent Partnership and they said it would be unlikely I would get a statement yet for DS as other services like COunty Inclusive Resource hasnt been brought in yet etc!!

Although I would like him to be assessed!!

You can apply to the LEA for statutory assessment yourself. You don't need to wait for anything.

I was advised school have to be seen to have tried every avenue before a statement is given or considered!

(from the IPSEA Website)

Asking for a statutory assessment

When should I ask?

If you believe:

- that your child has a learning difficulty or a disability which is holding them back at school; and

- that the school is not able to provide the help your child needs

So, yes, you have to prove that school isn't able to help your child from within their own resources.

I don't know how long you've been dealing with this or what your history is.

But many people on here got statements by themselves. Many others also got turned down.

If you've still got good relations with school then continue to pursue that route. But if they can't provide for your child don't let them fob you off....

Well DS is now in Reception (since Sept) before that he was in the Nursery setting there which is still part of the Foundation Unit. He has had Behaviour Support Unit come in and work with him once a week!!

My concerns at school are:

His behaviour
The help he needs when going to toilet
Accessing cirriculum

Also he comes home daily in such a mess as they dont clean him after meals!!!

Good news is that if he is under the behaviour support unit than he is allready on school action plus.

So the nexxt step is a statement if his needs aren't being met.

Keep working with school. It normally takes a long time for these things to happen. But remember at any stage you can take control by submitting the application yourself.

School do have to prove that they've done everything they could and it didn't work for you yo get a statement.
