I have a meeting to discuss this at school.

I think the head is ok with it.

What sort of things do I need to be looking at - days/hours, what I will do, what school will do?

Any suggestions?

AFternoons only (FIRST 2, THEN 3 ETC) is what we've done for years, then gradually moving up to one full day to trial how that goes. Any work sheets or topics sent home, so you can keep him up with the class work in morning. If the Head is ok with it, that is fab - really forward-thinking, good school!

That's interesting. I was assuming it would be easier to take him in for the mornings and come home at lunch. Is that because it is easier to do the 'work' stuff at home and let him go in for the easier afternoon?

The additional problem is having a little one in reception who will go crazy if his brother is going to school with him but going home - he's already moaning 'I don't want to go to school'too.

I should say, he is already at school - in Year 3 and doing full days. I;m trying to cut back

Depends on what your child's strengths are.

Most of the 'work' like Maths and English are done in the morning. So if he is good at those subjects but finds 'socialising' hard, then I'd send him in for the mornings and collect him at lunchtime.

I then wouldn't bother to do anything in particular with him in the afternoon.

However if formal learning is causing him the stress then I would send him in for the afternoon. But the afternoon has less routines, and he will be more tired, so I think afternoons are harder to do than mornings.

I would just agree to keep up with / teach him maths and English at home and wouldn't really worry about anything else....

Great news that you got the HT on board.

Bubbles - XPost.

I agree. A Y3 kid should be doing mornings not afternoons.

Mornings are by far more structured than afternoons.

Thanks. There are a couple of days where he would like to go in in the afternoon I think - swimming and special time on a Friday. I will sit down with him I think and see what he wants to do.

I agree about keeping afternoons light - I was thinking about just trying to consolidate difficult areas for him in fun ways e.g. using his obsessions!
