Can I put DS2's name down for an ASD unit, before a statement is in place?

DS2 will be starting school in September in year, now I know in some ways that is a long way off, but humour me please!

We, as his parents, have requested an assessment to be done, we are literally in the very starting stages of this. I am aware of how long it can take to get a statement in place, so can I jump the gun and put his name down for an ASD unit, and then if the statement isn't in in time, delay him starting or defer for however long etc.? Or even if by that point we feel he could handle mainstream, then just not take his place?

Do you even put names on a list for special schools? Would he have to have a formal DX?

I suppose what I am asking is, is there any time that can be saved in the process? Last thing we need is to have the statement in place (though that would be lovely!) and then him not having a place at the unit.

No is the short answer. In England and Wales, to attend a specialist school you have to have a Statement of SEN which names that school.

In Scotland it is easier, and you only need the say-so of an Ed Psych.
