car seat question (ASD)

ok 3yr old with ASD, just learnt how to unclip his seat belt.

Right so I know I have to do something but not sure what. ASD nurse recommended crelling harnesses, but ds is not general houdini and the crelling seems like overkill. Is there something that would just stop the clip being unclipped?

But am I just being nieve? has anyone dc progressed from unclipping to escape artist extrodinaire?

Dd2 started unclipping a few weeks ago, last weekend i was driving along a busy road and dd2 appeared through the middle of the seats trying to make her way to me, luckily dh was sat in the front and managed to get her back in her seat and straped in.

I think we will have to get a crelling harness.

The problem with a Crelling Harness is that you still need the seatbelt for safety. The Crelling just keeps the child in one place so it doesn't solve the seat belt problem unless he give up because the Crelling is still holding him.

Is it a normal car seatbelt he's undoing or a 5 point harness?

If it's a normal seatbelt there are seats with 5 point harnesses you could use at this age. The problem is this wouldn't last long.

I think that you really need to find a way of training him not to undo the clip rather than finding a different way to restrain him.

normal seat belt, he is out of height/weight range for standard 5 point harness,

so even if he was in a crelling he would still be able to undo his seat belt using the clipper, or have I understood wrong

Have a look at the Crelling website. They have good pictures and they show the seatbelt doen up over the top of the harness.

So what you need it tips for how to get him to stop opening the seatbelt.

What sort of strategies are usually most successful with him?

DS2 is 4yo, and has a tendency to slip his arms out of the 5 point harness and try to undo the harness. We've gone the desperation route of putting his music (God help us, it's Mickey Mouse Christmas music - his current obsession!) in the CD player when we're driving. If he slips his arms out of tries to undo the harness, we turn off the music. So far, fairly effective after a couple demonstrations. But good grief, I hope his taste in music improves soon - or at least begins to widen a bit. I swear I can hear that music in my sleep.... oh wait, I can! It's the same CD playing at night in his room.

It's a buckle guard and not expensive.

Thank you for all other advice, was giving the training some serious thought but wasn't quite sure how much more button moon I could take I wanted to find out it wasn't effective longterm when I was going down the motorway one day
