Hi, I'm applying for a statutory acessment to try to get a statement for my daughter. I'm using a template letter off a website recommended by someone on MN.

The circumstances are a bit tricky though. She's in year 1 of a private school who IMHO are failing to meet or recognise her needs. She will be leaving the school at christmas. I'm now looking and applying to state schools.

The first question is: I believe her educational needs are as follows.....

Do I say what I think she might have, or list the facts eg, she has delayed speech, shows inappropriate behaviour with strangers, lacks empathy and understanding etc? Or do I say "I think she might have AS?

The other question I'm unsure of is: My reason for believing the school cannot on their own make the provision required to meet my daughters needs are......

This is tricky as they are talking about the school she's at, witch don't have the funding. I need to let them know that a state school wouldn't be able to either without some help. My DD needs a lot of attention and constand reminding of what she's supposed to be doing. She wants to do her own thing and has been known to disrupt lessons. She also has other needs that don't apply to school such as her soiling herself. She'll hold it in at school but at home she's constantly doing it. She very rarely uses the toilet for a poo. Hmm

Anyway, if someone could help me, I'd be really greatful. Thanks. Smile

Have a look at this thread here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/special_needs/1077578-Can-someone-check-this-for-me/AllOnOnePage#22108912

You need to idenitify her difficulty then show had it impacts on her schooling

so x has a speech and language delay of x years (if you have been given such info). This includes her understanding of language too. She therefore needs high levels of adult supervision in order to be able to understand instructions and interact with her peers.

x is not reliably toilet trained and due to chronic constipation soils regularly.
x also has difficulty with gross and fine motor skills and is unable to dress and undress independently and will need help several times a day with personal care.

and so on.

Wrt to current school, I think your best bet is to stress even with a small class size, your daughter's needs are not being met as she needs additional support. May be worth trying to phone IPSEA or SOS!SEN as I'm not sure whether you should make it clear you want to transfer her to a state school.

That was a great link, thanks. I've added it to favourates.
Reading that though I'm not sure wether she'd get a statment or not. We can try. Smile

It sounds like your daughter does meet the criteria for a statement but it is impossible to say whether she will get one. I thought my DS1 was pretty borderline but they issued one without any delays (in fact it went through early Shock). Wrong decisions are made but there is an appeal process. one step and time though, get your request sorted and in.
