aaarrrggghh had a useless meeting tody with learning support person, who basically said that DD3 "wont get a statement" in reply to me telling her I'd applied...she then told me that there was no extra funding applied to the statement ... - is that right??? I thought if she got a statement there would be some extra funding attached?
Whole sessiopn was useles...she focused totally on dyslexic approaches...which shocked nme as she had only touched ont that in her report...then when I mentioned her diagnosis pf Aspergers (towrads the end) she said "oh yes I forgot she had a diagnosis of aspergers" WHAT!?!
NOw I have no idea what to think. DD has diagnosis of aspergers...but possible dyslexia has been mentioned several times now... but keep being told "she's too young to diagnose" or "I can't diagnose" etc...
I am about to send in my further info for stementing process.School are supporting me, but everyone is talking to me like I'm mad for even trying to get her statement.
I am sooo fed up I have documented evidence she is performing well below her potential, and that school cant provide what she needs and quite honestly enough is enough... I am so sick of it all being such a battle though...

Shame you didn't have a tape recorder - you could have really gone to town on her.

You, of course, realise that she's talking crap.

She cannot prejudge wether you wil / not get a Statement.

Forget about funding - that's their problem - not yours. Get the Statement and the support stated in it has to be delivered - by law. How they find the funds to do so is up to them.

Ignore the 'she'stoo early to dx dylexsia' that's crap too. You can either go and get a private assessment for dyslexia or ask the Ed Pysch to test.

Just ignore the tossers and await the outcome of the decision as to whether they will issue a Statement.

Meanwhile keep a runnng diary of every conversation you have with evry person about your DD. Who said what, when etc. You'll find that really useful if you do end up having to appeal.

It's a battle because the Local authority, as far as SN support is concerned, is judge , jury and excutioner. Any SN's they identify cost them money to support. That's why they try to discourage gullible parents with the - we don't do Statements or 'there is no funding' crap. The more SNs they ignore the cheaper it is for them - sad but true.

Ignore it and concentrate on holding the to account via the SN legislation and get the best deal you can wring out of them.

Best wishes

No, there is no funding attached to a statement, but if your statement says that ds needs a helicopter ride to the seaside every Saturday then that is as good as funding because it ain't gonna come free is it?

Don't worry about the funding thing. It isn't as if you are asking for money directly to your bank account. All you need from the statement is your ds' needs to be documented and then the solutions. What they cost or don't cost is none of your concern. If they can find a fab TA who will work for free then lucky them.

Agnesdipesto · 05/11/2010 21:15

well my SEN officer also told me we would not get a statement at 3 and we did - all reports backed us up and she was forced to write one. She wrote the minimum - ignoring all the reports - and we took her to tribunal where the statement was increased from 2 hours specialist teacher training nursery staff a year to 35 hours direct specialist teaching a week. And apparently the statement went through an expert panel - not very expert if they underestimated need by 840%

These people are full of bullshit - its all about resources and not about need. Its crap you have to fight for it but can be worth it in the end.

You're not mad they just want you to doubt yourself.

And yes you can get more funding - 6 times more in our case Grin

OverflowingMum · 05/11/2010 21:23

oh thanks all.Grin
It has taken me time to build up to applying, but now I am just so pi**ed off with them all! When she sat there and siad "she won't get a staement" in response to me telling her I'd applied I just replied "well we'll see about that"
I have so had enough! If they want a fight they can have one. I have in the past home educated all of my kids when I felt this was in their best interests...and that was a battle...so I aint afraid of fighting for themWink...just it is so draining some times... But I WILL get what my dd deserves no matter what it takes!!Wink

I know it is draining isn't it?

What you want is to have trust in the system to tell you what your child needs so that if someone says your child is fine, or doesn't need extra help etc, you can feel confident that this is a good thing and not an excuse to not meet needs with resources.

What a world! You are doing a brilliant job - just keep posting here for support and reassurance.

WetAugust · 05/11/2010 21:51

... But I WILL get what my dd deserves no matter what it takes!!

We all reach that stage eventually.

Best wishes and you can rely on all our help and support.

what LEA are you OP? First letter

fightingthezombies · 05/11/2010 22:15

I was told I wouldn't get a statement and (after a bit of a battle) have just been given one - there are many others on here who have been told the same. As many have said it's all about cost and LA's trying to fob you off. If you know that your dd needs it just keep on fighting, don't give up. Good luck.

StarkAndWitchesWillFindYou · 05/11/2010 22:21

yeah. I was told I wouldn't get a statement as ds is getting everything which was nothing

A year later, 100% 1:1, weekly OT, weekly SALT, Weekly autism outreach as well as specific emotions, language and learning programmes.

pinkorkid · 06/11/2010 08:35

Just to echo other posters: we had the same reaction from our ds' primary school and were put off applying but eventually went ahead and LEA have agreed he needs a statement.

I don't know why this seems to be so often the kneejerk reaction of some sencos/tas - wonder cynically if it's about buying time to cover up inadequacies of their provision for dcs to date...

I would just suggest you minute your meeting with the ta. Good luck with the statementing.

OverflowingMum · 06/11/2010 09:28

Thanks for all the replies. It is very reassuring to hear others have been through similar and succeeded!
I have just written down outline of what was said in meeting yesterday while it's fresh in my mind - good idea that as it may well prove useful!
I'm going to finish gathering my evidence/info etc this weekend and send that back...then will just have to wait...fingers crossed!
We are Rotherham LEA , although dd is actually at school in sheffield, but we live in rotherham so have had apply to them....not sure if that is going to make things more difficult...hey ho!
