cage for autistic child. This has already been posted on the In The News Board but thought it was definitely worth a mention over here. Have no words really Sad.

there is so much that is so wrong with that situation Shock not just the cage!

shimmerysilverghosty · 01/11/2010 15:04

Do you feel like you can't even think of anything to say though bigcar? It is just so bad that words do not do it justice, that is how I felt when I saw it.

it literally does leave you just open mouthed Shock He's not been outside at school for ages, never mind being taught on his own, wtf happened to inclusion?

bigcar · 01/11/2010 15:10

and his family helped fund raise for it, obviously not knowing what was planned

2shoes · 01/11/2010 15:11

just posted on the other thread,
it is sick

telluthetruth · 01/11/2010 15:40

Omg am horrified! so much awareness to raise it makes me want to weep....

Smallmonkfish · 01/11/2010 15:58

So much for progression. Had to close the link pretty quick, I genuinely wanted to vomit.

That's how they used to treat people in Victorian times, all they need to do now is to get people to pay to come and watch the child.

How sad Sad Even sadder that they didn't see how wrong it was before they outcry.

ghoulsforgodot · 01/11/2010 16:22

What the hell is that??

[stunned silence]

sumum · 01/11/2010 16:34

OMG

5inthebed · 01/11/2010 16:39

That is bloody terrible. I can't even begin with just how wrong it is!

willowthecat · 01/11/2010 16:44

The person who thought of this should be put in the cage !!

sugarcandymonster · 01/11/2010 16:47

It's awful. But it doesn't actually surprise me. DS's previous school also taught him separately from the other children for months. I am so, so glad he's now in a special school (with acres of outdoor space).

The sad thing for this boy is that he's 18 and I can't imagine what else he must have gone through over the years at that school. At his age they're unlikely to put much effort into building anything suitable for him as it'll take so long to agree funding and planning that he'd probably be due to leave by the time it's done.

cansu · 01/11/2010 17:28

How bloody depressing, insulting, can't really describe how I feel about that..

Triggles · 01/11/2010 18:18

That's dreadful, not to mention inhumane. So essentially they set up a dog run for him and they felt that was appropriate?? Incredibly sad.

TheArsenicCupCake · 01/11/2010 18:28

And if a family did that can you imagine what social services would do about it?

Totally disgusting !

myra · 01/11/2010 19:23

its not the first time that i have seen this done.
our local council built one for a boy that i worked with about 13 years ago. his mother asked for it to be built in the back garden so that he could go out the back and play without him escaping and always under supervision.

LunarRose · 01/11/2010 21:06

OMG

tallwivglasses · 01/11/2010 23:18

I don't know whether to be sad, angry or very, very frightened.

tiredmummyneedswineandsleep · 01/11/2010 23:34

Sad words fail me that something like this could happen in 2010

tallwivglasses · 01/11/2010 23:36

It got me thinking about what will happen to ds when I'm dead, etc. Had a cry.

Then I looked at the cage again and thought - that wouldn't last five minutes if ds was inside it Grin

bullet234 · 02/11/2010 08:54

How the bloody hellfire could anyone have ever thought that was appropriate is beyond me.

DeadlyNightShadeofViolet · 02/11/2010 09:41

It makes me feel physically sick that this was thought to be a good idea.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 02/11/2010 10:14

We had the same experience as sugar. Ds1 was taught separately at mainstream, in the playground separately and had to be glued to someone at all times as he could easily escape.

At SLD school the environment is designed with children like him in mind and he has freedom. There are high fences around the school which means the children have a large space they can play in and staff don't have to glue themselves next to the kids just supervising excape attempts.

I did this Hmm at 'a miscommunication'.
