Hello ladies, it's TotalChaos trying out a new name.

DS is on movicol for chronic constipation. Have recently had to up dose from 1/2 sachet a day to 1 sachet. Even at 1 sachet we have been having problems of small seeps, leading up to a proper big poo. This morning though - a different problem - a small seep leading up to a part watery/part over soft poo. Now DS could have a tummy bug - (usually no poos or seeps till after schoolm thankfully) but assuming that's not the case, as he seems well in himself, could it be that he's finally cleared out, and the 1 sachet a day is too much and I should reduce it slightly - say to 3/4 sachet per day?

PS - any advice on diet welcome, DS is a fussy eater, will have fruit/fruit juice but v. little veg.

Hi, love the new name. :)

Sounds as if the blockage is gone to me. Id reduce his movicol and continue to monitor. As for diet when DD had this problem we would give her half water half prune juice...took me several shops to find prune juice but it was the most effective fruit juice. If he is eating fruit thats great so I wouldnt worry about veg for now. :)

Do Heinz still do a baby food can of liquidised Prunes?

Does sound like he has cleared out.

a good tip I got on here was emptying the sachet into something else then adjusting by teaspoon - easier to judge when trying to reduce from 1 sachet down.

Diet-wise, any dried fruit seems to help DS1 and a couple of weetabix - though I find any more than 3 weetabix in a day also seems to cause problems.

thanks ladies, will probably reduce the movicol today or tomorrow, I already do the teaspoon thing to alter the dose.

I'd keep him on the current dose until he has had several days of VERY loose poo. We thought that once we'd seen some some soft stuff it was all ok, but after many recurrences discovered that with a significant impaction the movicol takes ages to break it down and if you stop treating/reduce too quickly there may well be a colon full of soft stuff.. that gradually blocks up again.

We now give it a good few days until we are sure there is NOTHING left then gradually reduce (in my DS2's case 2 adult sachets a day is maintenance) to a lower amount..and push the fluids..:)

I'd second the staying on the same dose. It can take ages to get a proper clear out and maybe if half a sachet wasn't always effective, he needs the full sachet. It can take ages for the bowel to regain it's proper function after years of constipation. However, if you have a special needs health visitor, they are often good on poo! You could get their advice

Hi total, strangely we are having poo issues again! Tricky one isn't it? We have had small seeps to full on 'the squits' (sorry, tmi but don't know how else to put it) and ds is still constipated - it takes a bit of time to get him cleared.

I think I have to have a re-think about my ds' regime, however, I would probably keep your ds on the one satchet for another couple of days and monitor him.

bleak laugh at SN HV, they don't have them at all in my city. am seeing school nurse on Thursday to discuss further. Right now am keeping him on 1 sachet for next day or two.

If taking juice - carrot juice can be added to lots of fruit juices without affecting the taste too much and helped us allot. Just seams to keep movements going without as much acid as pure fruit juice and also for us stopped alot of the stinging wee/fluids in general that came with incidents
