Hi we had our appt today with the peads and now have a verbal dx of asd and dyspraxia.

It is actually rather a relief to have it confirmed as the school last year just made me think i was a bad mother who was imagining things.

Ds is going to have six months of assessments before seeing the peads for a formal written diagnosis.

Now all I have to do is battle with the school[hgrin]

I have managed to explain his dyspraxia to ds but how and when should I explain the asd?

'Ds is going to have six months of assessments before seeing the peads for a formal written diagnosis'

What? Why?

Is there any way on earth you can get the Paeds to write down that he has a verbal diagnosis?

God almighty. If he has a dx, he has a dx, why the faffing around?

Sorry, hope you're okay.

Its to find out the best way to help him with his problems, his school will get specific things to do with ds, as will I and dh.

The peads are ringing us on monday/tuesday though so I can ask if they will write a quick report.

Yeah I am fine, I know we are only at the beginning of a long journey, but at least it has started now.

Contact Autism Outreach to support him in school or Inclusion, they will come with you to meet with your SENCO, Hmm and I found giving school the NAS guide to teaching children with ASD useful...free to download. HTH

Six months...:( I was moaning as it took 3, ask specifically what assesments your waiting for and why so long?...ours was for Psychologist to do cognitive assesment... As well as an initial dx report and referral to parental support like ASD workshops...I just did one, not much more usefull info but you can ask Autism Outreach/Psychologist etc for coping strategies with specific problems and source further help like Psych drop in service.

OOOh I suddenly feel like I know a bit of what Im doing!!! OOER. Blush....(I dont really have a clue!:))

How old is your DS?

There are quite a few books on Amazon aimed at children to explain about ASD. My son liked Can I tell you about aspergers?

If you think you son is too young, there is no hurry to tell him.... But if he feels like he is a bit different than I'm sure he'll appreciate the explanation.

BTW I think a verbal dx first and then a written one 6 months later is perfectly normal and exactly what we had. The verbal dx isn't a dx. It's just the paeds best guess at the moment, but he really needs it confirmed by seeing the same behaviour is still present in 6 months time.

It doesn't change anything. Tell everyone you want to he has a dx of ASD - and no one you don't want to :)

youshysmum,

You could possibly obtain a Statement for him in six months which could help with additional educational needs. Infact I'd be applying to the LEA for such a document now particularly as you have two dxs (one albeit verbal but makes no odds really).

Don't let the pros muck you about.

IPSEAs website is helpful if you decide to try for a Statement:-
