Running in circles (in a literally sense)

Hi again

I posted the other day that my DS (23 months) has been referred to a SALT and portage.
I've been wondering for a while whether he might be ASD.

Since the referral more and more things are coming home to me.
In the last few months DS has got huge enjoyment from just running around his toys, like a massive obstacle course. He'll do it for ages.

He'll also do it when he needs a poo, and today he hasn't been feeling very well, so has been doing it a lot.

Could this be just normal toddler making himself dizzy? Or perhaps is this a sort of self stimulating thing?

It's something the consultant didn't ask about, and I didn't think to mention, but suddenly it's become quite obvious.

this is one of my ds's stimming behaviours. he will run round in circles for ages when reciting a script. he doesn't have an ASD, although i thought he did when he was your ds's age. he does have a sensory processing disorder though (as well as language delay/disorder) and we've found that o.t. input does help.

i don't know your ds's full story though, so if he meets the "triad" criteria in other ways, it could be part of a fuller ASD picture. will you be seeing your consultant again soon? it sometimes helpful to keep a note of things as they occur to you to take along to these meetings, otherwise it can be really hard to remember everything, especially if you are feeling a bit emotional.

hello my ds 3.2 also does this. he sometimes chants words or made up words as he does it. he is suspected asd and adhd.
not saying that your ds has an asd though. it may just be a toddler behaviour or related to something else such as sensory processing, dyspraxia, a lot of conditions overlap.
can you speak to your health visitor to see if she can take if up with the paed or refer you for another appointment?

Thanks both!
RaggedRobin - totally wish I'm made more notes to take along - will do next time.
It's useful to know this type of behaviour might be related to other sensory processing things.
I do have another appt at the end of Nov, so this time I'll go armed with notes and questions.

My Dd3[8] has always run or walked round and round in circles, she seems to find it relaxing, I have a rug in my living room with a pattern around the edge of it, I often find her walking round and round the pattern. She doen't have a dx but is being assessed for a possible ASD.
The only time I worry about it is when she goes round and round me because it makes me really dizzy, it doesn't seem to effect her though.

My DS (ASD) used to this (running around a plie of toys or the ouffe , or whatever took his fancy and running in circles when he wants the toilet) a lot a year or two ago (he is nearly 5 now), he still has moments of doing it frequently but not an everyday thing anymore.

He wanders around, fiddling with small toys and humming tunes a lot atm.

genieinabottle · 22/10/2010 22:21

sorry Grin meant to type a plie of toys or the pouffe!!

DD2 (going though assessment atm) does this. My mum has a table she puts her hand on and goes round and round, will run in circles but loves to spin but does a weird thing with her eyes looking out of corner when she does it.

LunarRose · 23/10/2010 22:28

ooo ds son does the eye thing when spinning!!

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 23/10/2010 23:02

wasnt sure if it was a stim thing or just dd Grin

LunarRose · 24/10/2010 20:57

never thought of it before but it is rather cute when he does it.

Think it's probably a sensory autism thing!!! Grin
