My DS is nearly 5 recently diagnosed with ASD.

As a parent can I request a statement?

Just wondering everyone elses journeys to getting one etc as I know they are sometimes hard to get!!

yes you can. if you go to a website called ipsea there should be a template for you to use. statements are invaluable and the earlier you get 1 the better, good luck!

Yes, we did and there are definitely advantages if parent requests.

The main thing we did was to highlight DS (ASD) (5) inability to access the curriculum despite being on SA+. In other words even though the school had put in place reasonable measures of support, this was still not suffucuent to enable DS to learn. For us it was speech and lang difficulties and sensory problems that prevented his learning. I also went on and on about the complexities and multi-dimensional issues that DS had.
IPSEA website great and would recommend instigating process yourself-if we had waited for the school we would still be waiting and it was a relatively quick process for us so DS had staement in place for Year 1 which has made a huge difference.
