Hi all,

I wanted to get some advice on my ds, I have had a few concerns about him for well a long time really.

He is 3 and his speach is pretty bad there is only a handfull of words he can say clear enough for others to understand.

He doesnt follows simple comands at all, constanly runs off, climbs, sitts on floor when we are out and to be honest is actually a danger he will run and hide and will not answer when being called.

he hid in a shop recently, even when i was calling fanticlly and on the verge of tears wouldnt answer me.

I know i am biased but it doesnt seem as though he is naughty, Its like he is in a world of his own like he doesnt understand what i am telling him.

and things that hurt him he will do again. if he touched the kettle/radiator and got burnt he would do it again just too be sure that it really is hot.He will lick things randomly/undresses at any opportunity even out doors.

I dont know what to do with him. its non stop. I dread having to go out with him. as its constant chasing/explaining why he shouldnt do things. when i am explaing he turns his head as wont look at me.

He is 1 of 4 dc and never had this with the others.

I did take him to the gp re his speach and was told wait till he starts nursery if the teacher has concerns bring him back?

But its hard work and i dont want to wait for a teacher to rais concerns i really need help with ds now!

any ideas what this sounds like? or who i can get to take me seriously?

TIA. x

It was daft of the GP to tell you this not just to say unhelpful as well.

I would take your DS to another GP within the practice asap and ask that person for a referral to a developmental paediatrician. Do not take no for an answer!. This certainly warrants further investigation for your sake as well as your son's.

Have you tried your Health Visitor?

Our Health Visitor was brilliant and referred ds to SALT, Paed and dietitian.

google your PCT for phone details of your local speech and language therapy department department, phone up and see if you can refer to speech therapy directly, rather than bothering with HV or GP. Now he is 3 you should find people take your concerns more seriously - up till 3 there is a chance with some kids that they are just late talkers, who will suddenly catch up, so NHS tends to fob you off a bit. if you have a good HV, talk to her - if not, find a different GP and explain all your concerns re:language and behaviour. Given your concerns I think you should be asking for a paediatrician referral as well as a language one.

in general - you say he doesn't seem to follow simple commands - given his problems with speech, it could be that he doesn't always understand - so give more visual cues like gestures/photos/pictures, and keep your language simple and consistent, caveman style, and see if that helps.

useful websites and books re:language problems

www.ican.org.uk
www.hanen.org
www.afasic.org.uk
www.teachmetotalk.com

any of the Hanen Centre books - It Takes Two to Talk or You Make the Difference (unlikely to be in library unfortunately)
The Parent's Guide to Speech and Language Problems by Debbie Feit
Baby Talk by Sally Ward

-- both the above should be easily available in library or bookshop

sounds exactly like my DS was aged 3. Dont be fobbed off. Get a paediatrician appointment or maybe even a hearing test as this can sometimes be a cause of speech delay.

what about a rucksack with a handle on so he thinks he is moving freely but isn't?
