i am getting to the end of my tether with ds.he is 18 with a mental age probably of about 13.

today, something made me open his post - he seemed to have loads of it and i dont know why but i had a hunch. i opened it and he has gone to one of those disreputable loan companies that charge massive massive interest. he doesnt even understand what he has done. he had got into minor minor debt - im talking £100 - which i could have paid for him had he only come to me first - instead he has paid an admin fee for some bastard "company" to "find" him a loan - of £2000 with an APR of 58.8%. he doesnt even understand what that means. he had also taken out a contract with Orange for a netbook and dongle that i didnt know about - he doesnt even need it. he doesnt know why he did it. Orange have been brilliant - absolutely fantastic - and immediately dropped the contract but the loan thing i have absolutely no idea what to do with. the broker have taken the admin fee. he doesnt know who the loan is with, but he says he hasnt signed anything yet. does this mean ive caught this in the nick of time? the bank cant help. (ive tried) he has no real income to pay anything like this back - he has a part time job that pays £250 a month, he is at college 2 days a week.

if he hasnt signed anything does that mean they cant take the money? im shitting myself here i have to say.

i don't know about the existing debt, but i do know that you can get the credit reference agencies(experian and equifax) to flag his details so no credit check goes through automatically. this cifas might also be worth looking into.

If he hasn't signed anything they can't do anything. Even if he had there's a leagl cool off of a few days.

Get thee to the CAB; no signature no loan agreement is my reckoning, also try here

cheers, will bookmark that site scary. i am praying that he has just lost the admin fee and not signed anything yet.

If he has not signed anything I am not sure that they can even keep the admin fee.... it would be worth checking!

vicar - you should also be looking at preventative measures, cifas is a great way to prevent future hassles.

Ineed2 · 14/10/2010 21:38

Heck vicar... I really feel for you, went through a similar thing with Dd1, her "boyfriend" helped her to get a tv on credit and got her to apply for a credit card within weeks of her turning 18. I too opened her post and found the credit card stuff, it was a scary time. I agree with scary go to CAB and see what they advise, they are really good.

huckingfell - whats cifas? i am all for preventing future hassles....

he has given me all his bank cards. im just worried now the loan company will hassle him by phone etc - he is so easily swayed. i dont know how to find out what he has done. he hasnt a clue.

click on my link in previous post, fraud prevention organisation, it stops credit being auto approved.

huddspur · 14/10/2010 23:47

You need to go down to the citizens advice bureau with him tomorrow and seek proper advice.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 15/10/2010 07:40

Would also go to CAB with him as a matter of urgency.

Also look at Cifas.

I would also obtain credit reports regularly from Experian and Equifax (which address did he use to apply for the loan?).

This is about dealing with loan sharks:-

I would also be contacting Trading Standards here on your son's behalf.
