ds1 has ADS and ADHD
we are still waiting for a formal diagnosis (some of you might remember my other thread!)
to get him statemented and get him into a special needs school!
anyway we had parents evening last night and his teacher and the head master are very keen for him to go onto ritalin
his teacher said he has the knowledge and ability to do the work but lacks the concentration
iv just been having a google and have been looking at focus formula and bright sparks
and was wondering if anyone had tried them?
i really want to avoide ritilan if i can but i will do whats best for ds and iv still got to wait for a pead appointment anyway!!

It's got nothing to do with the teachers whether he's on medication or not. Only his doctors and parents can make that decision, and it will be joint. But if the school think he could focus better with meds then that would add weight to a medical assessment.

It's not as straightforward as they seem to think either. You can't just request Ritalin - methylphenidate is a controlled substance and there have to be very strong reasons for prescribing it. It took me a very long time indeed to get it for my son and I had to go to a private psych in the end.

Personally I'd avoid the herbal stuff, but that's my own view. If his concentration is that poor I doubt they'd have any effect. You could try fish oils but they barely touched the sides with my son.

For my/my son's situation methylphenidate has been incredibly helpful to his focus and attention problems. He's on a long-term trial and gradually tweaking to get optimum results - so far it's been 13 months and we're starting on atomoxetine next week to see if we can gain further benefits than from methylphenidate.

Also, try not to be put off by all the scaremongering around ADHD drugs. They're very well tested and effective if used correctly. The scare stories come from cases where children's dosages haven't been monitored properly and they've been over or undermedicated.

DS is noticeably more focused and less challenging when he has fish oils regularly. We also sometimes use rescue remedy when he is very stressed.

There is no reason to think that homoeopathy can work beyond a placebo effect.

Some studies have been done in ADHD and homoeopathy but the results have been unimpressive.

Some other alternative options have shown more promise but none of them seem to match conventional options.

Omega 3 supplementation has been tried in ADHD.

I'm sorry to say that it didn't prove successful.

Fish oils do nothing for adhd ds2, my dh was dead against medication but I managed to get him to give it a try. I have to say it was the best thing we did for him.

Eye Q is blended with evening primrose oil which can adversely affect any ASD symptoms.

Eskimo Kids is one of the better ones though there are a few. It's mixed with rapeseed.
