Our paed's referral for OT for DS (6, ASD)has come back as 'does not meet criteria' I am astonished!!

Am I to phone OT department and have a rant ro take it to CAF?

sorry to hear that Sad I'd ring OT and ask why not, a little more explanation is required. Bring it up at CAF and ring the paed who referred as s/he may not have put enough detail in and may be able to do something.

You're not in Herts, are you? Sorry if you don't want to say, but we are having the mother of all battles about OT at the moment, and i have just managed to get hold of their 'criteria' - absolutely ridiculous.

Spinkle · 09/10/2010 16:55

No, we're in Suffolk. I'd be interested in the criteria though.

Am assuming that paed would/should have known this - maybe the referral was just to shut me up...

Exactly the same problem here! I spoke to OT and they were absolutely lovely and couldn't apologise enough. Gave me some pointers for rereferral, Gp is going to have another go.

We have found good private OT, thanks to MN, but very expensive although initial chat with ds there is free. She said best to try and get it into statement. Luckily it is suggested in a few reports so hoping we can pull it off.

I'm going to bring it up at multi agency to see if anyone can push as well.

Waiting list is 12 months at the moment!

Good luck

Thanks Starlight - most useful info.

We do have a statement as it happens which has, annoyingly just been reviewed, though there was talk of some OT.

Spinkle can i ask how long it took for you to get your OT appt? I'm in suffolk too and currently waiting to see them after referral by the pead. Thanks :)

Spinkle · 10/10/2010 09:15

We didn't even get the referral, Disco. Sad

Apparently it's 12 month wait, I hear...

Spinkle, I had it mentioned to me that refusal to assess based on blanket criteria, could be grounds for a case under the Equality Act (was Disability Discrimination Act but this new act incorporates every kind of discrimination) - haven't followed that one up yet, but may be something to mention and note their reaction?

Starlight - really helpful comments, as usual!! Will go to my meeting with LEA tomorrow with some of your words in my head - thanks! Did they agree to the independent LEA providing the input stipulated in the statement or are you still having to contend with the NHS?

DiscoBabe · 10/10/2010 10:11

Oh I see. I'm sorry i thought you meant you had seen them and they had decided you didn't meet the criteria to be treated. As you can tell i'm not every experienced in this stuff.

I hope you can get the help your DS needs x

nuru · 10/10/2010 10:15

Sorry, meant independent OT, obviously! You can see what's preoccupying me at the mo....
Although, independent LEA - there's an interesting thought Wink

I'm in Bucks and have been waiting 19 months for OT. Statement says that OT input is required but given we've still not been assessed, what OT can be incorporated??

I have just bought this book

which is really good... and offers some other literature if you need more ideas while you wait.
good luck

Spinkle · 11/10/2010 17:32

Thanks for that negligentmummy I'll have a look at that.
