Do these sound like behavioural difficulties to you?

Had ados which was negative. 2 EP's have said this year that they suspected HFS/Aspergers.I wrote to paed querying his dx of 'behavioural difficulties' and their advice that sensory issues are to blame for some of the traits he has. I know sensory porblems may account for dome of ds's difficulties but how would these cause literal understanding, very fixed views, lack of empathy, social difficulties with children, general confusion and acute anxiety etc...? I requested further assessments to understand the difficulties and feel that the dx given is merely describing symptoms of something else. Letter now rec'd in response not mentioning further assessments but stating that consideration was given to all the info and observations and ASD is ruled out.States that the significant behavioural difficulties are not due to ASD and should be monitored by Tier 2 camhs and their advice implemented at home and school. Any advice appreciated. Is this just a fob-off?

Hey,
I completely understand your situation as min is very similar. I too have been told ds behavioural issues not due to SI disorder or his Dyspraxia.Apparantly he "needs to learn to deal with his emotions".We too had ados and was 1 point off being on AS.The paed is refusing to diagnose AS and as you put it "fobbing me off".

I think you should go with your instincts and also get in touch with t EP's.Forget the pead open some more doors for further assesments.Clinical psychology have been very supportive to us.

Good luck and take care.

What can EP do though? Has said she hopes we get answers to his difficulties but can't do a dx.

Great ormond street hospital has the national centre for high functioning autism. They accept GP referrals for second opinions, providing the local team (usually camhs) agrees. Also take direct referrals from camhs etc. Their website states that local services rarely refuse parents' request for a second opinion.

Worth a try?
