DS is 4 this month and need some ideas for presents, he played with pop up pirate and seem to really enjoyed it. Are there any other good turn taking games that he might enjoy. Games with dice and to many bits don't seem to work well.

Thanks in advance.

hungry hippos (travel version has no bits, it's all covered over)

agree with orchard toys - if he likes animals, they do a nice noahs ark pair game where you post each pair into a cardboard ark. and the incey wincey spider one is good. kerplunk is reasonably good, and there's an elc one where you balance toy monkeys off a tree that looks quite good, and a pop up dragon elc one.

trying to think of other games ds likes - Greedy Gorilla, Peppa Pig Jumbolino, dominos, elc Bee Tree Game, Spotty Dogs game.

oh Orchard toys are fab.

dd1 likes:

shopping list
spotty dogs
incy wincy
dotty dinosaurs
picture lotto (we play it as an open game, taking turns to match/pair up)

we have a Timmy Time version of Buckeroo.

magnetic fishing goes down well, and we have a few puzzles where we take turns (although this can get frantic - requires lots of coordination on my part!) - eg spelling puzzles, inset puzzles.

Thank you very much for your replies. I am going to have a look at all of them and compile a good list.

Crocodile dentist looks fun I sure I'll enjoy that too. :)

Another vote for Pop up Pirate here.

Buckaroo too.

Tumblin' Monkeys

Pig goes Pop.

And I must say I quite fancy Piranha Panic this year from Father Xmas.... Wink

AgnesDiPesto · 06/10/2010 19:45

Our pig goes pop does a pretty unimpressive pop it's more like a little belt loosening.
I was expecting more oomph.

I'm after Penguin Pile Up next

missworld2010 · 06/10/2010 19:56

I'm loving all these great ideas... just a quick question, how do you manage to persuade all of yours that they want to play a gam with you in the first place??!!! Blush

negligentmummy · 06/10/2010 20:02

orchard toys do a wonderful one called cockadoodle moo. it comes with a cd and you have to listen for all the farm sounds and build your path to the scarecrow. mine ADORE it...

Some great ideas here!

Ds (3.5) loves Elefun (elephant which blows butterflies through its trunk and you catch them in a net). Not exactly turn-taking but more fun with two (or more) people, and you sort of have to play together when you fill up the trunk each time.

Getting them to play with you... well you could start playing it with someone else and make it look like the most fun EVER - laugh like you've never laughed before - it might interest him. Or start using tiny bribes treats each time he joins in (eg chocolate button each time he takes a turn, then gradually fade the treat once he starts enjoying the game enough on its own).

Missworld2010: I completely understand what you are asking until very recently DS would just get up and wander off when I brought a game out. He has weekly visits from a lady from the autism advisory service. She adapted a picture lotto game to keep him interested just picking up the cards and him matching them to the boards but taking it in turns.

Pop up pirate seemed good because it's not to lengthy, with the pirate popping up pretty quickly and he can see we are all having a turn.

More great ideas thanks! I will have loads of ideas for birtday and christmas. I have looked at Elefun because it looked really fun but I've not read great reviews. I will reconsider this thanks. :)

Elefun is good fun, but lasts a v. short length of time, hence the lukewarm reviews, as you faff around setting it up, then the actual butterfly catching bit takes a minute tops.

Missworld - at this stage, find something interesting, and adapt the rules to make it simple/interesting enough for your child to hopefully enjoy...,

Jen2009 · 08/10/2010 01:03

Kerplunk, Don't Break the Ice also good. Lucky Ducks is fun and can just take turns putting ducks in and out of "pond". (NOT a good game if your son likely to get obsessed with the "pond" which spins in circles!) Great Little Trading Company was selling their own version of Kerplunk (called it something else ) with more child friendly-size sticks and balls . Good luck.

alfiemama · 08/10/2010 10:17

I know this isn't a family game as such, but we have booked Alfie on Lego therapy through the NAS if you google it you may find it in your area. Looks really good as the utilise small teams and use turn taking. Also no winners or losers, which can always be an issue in our house.

We have a game called the balance came, bit like jenga but with long sticks, he loves this. Mine also like the leapfrog leapster games as they have a twist and can be very educational, we call them their ds's Wink
