Wiltshire Wheelchair Service is a JOKE

Just a massive rant, so please feel free to ignore me.

I don't know if anyone else has problems with their local authorities wheelchair service ? or if it is just us but i am thoroughly fed up with ours.

Had lots of issues in the past with them, supplying naff chairs etc but recently my daughter was reassessed for a new chair having outgrown her previous one (thats wheels were always falling of Sad.

Anyway a week after the assesment we were delivered a chair that i was very sceptical about as it lacked anything in the way of support. My daughter needs a lot as she can't sit up unsupported, plus she has displaced hips and a very large defecit in leg length thanks to an unsuccessful op.

2 weeks after assesment we had a visit from the service's physio. She brought out a 4 point harness (but with bits missing), and also minus a back brace the chair needed. We'd been unable to use the chair as it only had a lap belt. The harness she did bring has had to be tied on to the handlebars of the wheelchair and not only is it a nightmare to get on and of but it either cuts into my daughters neck, or rubs on her shoulders. We were told they'd be sending out a back brace and a more suitable harness shortly, weeks ago now and still nothing. My daughters not been able to attend youth club because she doesn't have an adequate/safe wheelchair (she is home ed). Haven't been able to take her far in the chair at all as after 5 minutes she starts flopping over to one side with her head hanging down.

Wheelchair service only hold clinic once a month, and the lady who assess only works 2 days a month. Yesterday i got a letter saying she'd be visiting my daughter this Thursday P.M approx (as both myself, a surgeon and doctor had requested a reassessment). My daughters hospital O.T would like to be at the appointment too to help me see my daughter gets a decent chair this time as she is post op and needs a lot of support to support the surgery she's had done. I rang wheelchair service to ask for an approx time, other than just P.M (so that my daughters O.T could attend) to which i was told in no uncertain terms that they will not give me any estimation of time ! So the o.t rang herself explaining she'd like to be present and the lady she spoke to said she thought the appointment would be A.M !
So i rang back and they told me they'd get the lady who is visiting to give me a call today. No calls so i have just rang them and they said that the lady wouldn't be calling me today and the best they could offer is that the lady ring me when she's on her way to me tomorrow.

This will obv be to short notice for my daughters O.T to attend (plus she has other prior appointments herself). I am livid, my daughter is completely dependant on a wheelchair to be able to get around the house, never mind out of the house. They've given us 2 days notice and no indication of time what so ever. I refuse to believe they don't have a list of patients in some sort of order in which they'll be doing their visits, its not like i was asking for a particular time slot,or a specific time, between 1pm and 3pm would have done. Plus i've got other children and the school run to do. I don't think i was asking much.

I feel their service is just a total joke and their treatment of the disabled (expecting my daughter to sit in waiting all day for them) is disgusting. Although given the rubbish chair they've supplied her with it's not like she could be going far anyway, they've made me so Angry.

I'm going to make a formal complaint, when i find out who/where to make it too, not that anyone will care as i guess we're just supposed to be greatful she gets a chair at all Angry

You would think out of professional courtesy that they would give the OT some idea of timing. I know they don't believe that the 'hoi polloi' should be given any credence.
I'm sure they would come up with some excuse reason anyway

Thanks, thats all i was wanting, an idea of a time to expect them,(given i have other children and a nursery and a school run to do) , i didn't think i was being that unreasonable Hmm

And maybe a half decent excuse might have even been better than just telling me to wait and see what happens on the day, which just felt like ignorance Sad

I was going to write and sympathise and say ours is bad too but having read that I think ours are doing pretty well!

I can't believe they treat you, your DD and your Ot like that, it's shocking. I don't relly know what to suggest other than to make an official complaint. I sometimes wonder if WCS realise how important they are to physically disabled people, it's not only their means of moving but so key in managing their condition. You'd think they knew that but sometimes I wonder!

Thats it exactly HairyMaclary, you put it perefectly, it's not just that a wheelchair is a physically disabled persons only means of moving but it is also key in managing their condition.

I think i will pinch that for my letter if you don't mind Smile i'm always to long winded, but you hit the nail on the head.

Thankyou for your reply

Ours seems pretty rubbish, going by my mate's experience. Her brakes fail constantly, she can't lift the thing into a car, therefore can't learn to drive (instructors won't do it, and she needs to be able to to go out alone), it's heavy, even though they said it was lightweight. I have trouble pushing up even a mild hill. They won't replace it as they say it suits her needs!

Did you know that the Red Cross loans out wheelchairs.

It may be an idea to phone up the Red Cross and ask them if they have a wide range of sizes of wheel chair.
