hi i have a 16 month old son who has been having trouble walking but as he is a bum shuffler the paeditrician told me that this is normal then on further examination he then told me he has double joints in both knees and both feet but is not going to take this further until hes over 18months old. i am now worried as to what this could mean???? and am just wondering if anyone has any information on this please

He probably means that your ds is hypermobile. Come and join us on our eds/hypermobile thread, but don't panic about what you read. Most people who have hypermobile joints do not have major problems, or even any problems. The paed is probably saying he will look again at your ds joints when he is a little older as all children are quite loose in their joints when they are little, and it can be quite hard to diagnose. Having said that my ds was diagnosed when he was 16 months old. Physio can be really helpful, heling to build up the muscles to support the joints better, there are also orthotic supports which can help and ot can help too, so don't panic. We are here and between us we have lots of experience.

Hi second what sparkle says pop and join us but don't be scared remember it is wide dx and please when you go back ask about physio and boots now

Ds3 was my 4th child and my others walked early.

Is he weight bearing at all crusing ?

SparkleRainbow · 04/10/2010 12:52

Try not to get too worried, I know that is hard, but it is early days yet. There are really good physio exercises to stabilise knees, and different shoes and orthotics can support his ankles, when he is ready. My ds was late to walk compared to my dds, he has eds hypermobile type and they do not. You can get different levels of severity of hypermobility, and some children experience very little pain,or no pain at all. It is worth remembering that most gymnasts and many athletes and dancers are hypermobile, and their hypermonbility is an asset to them not a disability. When his body is ready to sustain the effort needed for walking I am sure he will get there, and it will be a self fulfiling prophecy in that as soon as he is walking more confidently his muscle tone will improve and it will become easier. My ds has very hypermobile hips and shoulders, which made rolling over and crawling very difficult, but he caught up quickly enough. Did they give any any advice or info about the nature of his flexible joints, we might me able to help you more?

Hi rtb4 Smile

roundthebend4 · 04/10/2010 15:57

O would get some good supportive shoes if he is trying to stand kickers are very good

how was he at reaching his other milestones sitting crawling etc

16 months is just within normal parameters though on the top end but if worried call the paed sooner ask for referal to physio for help now even if just so you feel like your doing something

If read the eds thread please don't be scared by what we post as does not mean your ds will be the same in my case ds3 has other issues going on hence why used a wheelchair but he wax also very late in all his milestones and do wish I went withy fit instinct and pushed fog more help sooner

roundthebend4 · 04/10/2010 15:59

Just to reAssure you I have 4 dc that are hypermobile/eds and with the ds1ds2 and dd it does not really interfear with their daily lives paticulary apart from dd being good at gymastics

katielou84 · 04/10/2010 19:12

He could be double jointed in his hips whicheams the tendons give of a clicky sound I'm bit like snap crackle pop when I move with clicks grinds and groans

but look at shoes like kickers even though not walking as they give more stablith to the ankle so can help .I did not think ds would ever walk heade me wait till He was 3 but he can get around now but please don't worry that your ds will take that long ds is at extreme end plus other issues

All my others walked between 9 months and 16 months ,Can you take your ds seining as is good way to build up strenth without putting pressure on the joints

katielou84 · 05/10/2010 11:59

hiya

my dd4 as hypoermobility and very flexiable joints. she finally walked at 18months old, a lot later than my others. she was also a bum shuffler.

she walks fine now, i say fine, she has a little wobble when she walks, but its not that noticable.

she wears good supportive boots from clarks, but people did recommend kickers.

katielou84 · 05/10/2010 12:13

and does she have any further treatment now??? or is it once they walk they no longer need any kind of treatment?? if my son has this will he need an op? i really havent got a clue and just cant get it out of my head its all i think about just dont want him 2 have 2 endure any pain x

misdee · 05/10/2010 12:18

atm, we are seeing how she goes. she may need physio when she is a bit older, but for now she seems fine. just have to take care not to dislocate her joints as they move freely.

she is doublejonted/hypermobile in her feet, ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows and wrists.

katielou84 · 05/10/2010 12:28

ah bless her mines double jointed in both knees and feet that we kno of so far...to be honest he never checked any where else so will just have 2 wait and see in 4 mts il keep you informed of his progress thanks 4 all your help xx

Katielou

it depends on the child some will need extra physio which you tend to build into your daily routine or maybe supportive boots piedros but these are. Not the ugly things they once were

but no there are not ops to fix it even at extreme ends just physio to build up the supportive muscles

Please try not to worry but know easier said than done and it's good that has reached all the other milesstones as normal but I would maybe suggest in couple months. Time that you contact physio get on waiting lists so can learn some excersises

katielou84 · 05/10/2010 18:52

ah thankyou thats brilliant il get in touch with my doctor and ask him 2 refer me thanx again x

I second what rtb4 has said, and do try not to stress out too much. Get a referral from your gp, and take it from there. Good luck, let us know how you get on, and join us if you want to.

katielou84 · 10/10/2010 11:05

how do i join???
