ASD and statements

My DS is nearly 6 and was diagnosed with ASD in April. Not a surprise to us at all as we had been pushing for this for four years. We are lucky that he now has a statement, 20 hours 1-1 a week in school, (high acheiving school).

He is a lovely boy and tries to be good, his problems lie mainly in receptive speech. Lately his behaviour has started getting a little rough and mean though - delibertely standing on his one year old sisters had, stamping on the cats tail etc. Does a statement really work? I feel quite lost with all this. Everyone I know says it does but obviously it takes time. So worried what the future holds for us, perhaps I'm still grieving for my son?

I am afraid a Statement doesn't cure them but it is helpful if it gives him the help he needs to survive at school.
If he is getting rough at home it could be that the effort of coping at school is getting too much for him, especially as it is a high achieving school.
