DS has sensory problems. Hypersensitive to noise. Can't cope with the rain at all. Completely freaking and as it's raining all the time this is getting to be too much for everyone! Tried headphones, not working enough. How can I desensitise him to the sound of rain?

It's a difficult one. I'm not sure if he has sensory problems that you can desensitise him to certain sounds. I suppose it's more about how you cope with the meltdowns. When you say he freaks out, how does he react? What exactly has he been diagnosed with? What else is his trigger?

I'm sending a virtual hug anyway. :)

How would he react to a rain maker toy?...a small one.

Thanks for your responses. He has congenital neuro problem similar to hydrocephalus. Various global developmental probs but day to day it's the sensory issues that cause him most grief. Meltdowns involve him getting very distressed, crying shouting, begging me to make it stop. I'm trying to get him to understand that I can't make the rain stop and that all he can do is take himself to a room where the rain doesn't fall directly on the roof but that is not something he can do at school. Might try industrial ear defenders next.

He had rainmaker toy as a baby and wasn't bothered. His triggers seem to change over time and there is no consistent pattern. He's 9 and this is first year he's had the rain issue. HAtes various songs, especially nursery rhymes. This super sensitivity as opposed to just his usual hypersensitive state seems to come in waves. No idea why.
