Didn't really want to throw this open on the main board but is very interesting..wish this research had been published when the "ADHD is an excuse" thread was ongoing.

and Oliver James is proved to be a twat (though we didn't need any extra evidence of that Hmm)

There was a very heated debate on Radio 4's Today show this morning between the Professor and Oliver James. Worth listening to again when it goes up on the Today show website

wonder if that twatty teacher who blamed it all on parenting will come back on now they are proven wrong?I think not

Although I'm not in any way saying that ADHD is due to bad parenting, this research shows that a particular gene pattern is found in 14% of children with ADHD, and also 7& of children without ADHD. It doesn't prove ADHD is solely genetically based I don't think. Interesting though, and significant.

...and linking to Autism... which i have said all along :o

But...i shan't launch into 'my theory' rant here!!!!

The 7 % and 14% doesn't surprise me. I have a friend who has 4 children - all with the same genetic parents. Only 1 has been diagnosed ADHD - although, 2 of the others share traits, but not in a severe enough proportion to dx. The only DC not to show any signs is female. By the time you add in environmental factors such as position within the family - which has already been proven to affect personality type, or rather how you deal with life situations - I can easily see how the other children in the family could fall into the 7% without any suggestion of 'bad parenting' comments that often follow the DC who is in the 14%.
