After to speaking to a mum of a boy with ASD yesterday I found myself rather wound up.

Basically she said that my ds can't have ASD as they diagnosed her son within 10 mins of 1st appointment. We are 18mth down the road, and have been referred to CAHMs as my ds is very complex (Although I have had a verbal dx of ASD and ADHD)...

Sooooooo

If your dc has been offically dx with ASD how quickly was this confirmed?

Thanks Smile

Have I made an arse of myself? I suppose I'm just trying to say that DS at that age was very clearly autistic Sad

I know what you mean mists - I 'knew' as soon as I started reading about asd. It just took a long time for the other posibilities (because ds was not typical /had additional non asd traits) to be considered and ruled out by the system!!

Mists, our DSs sound v familiar, engineer genes on both sides here too. DS1 is v into Astroboy so my dad has convinced him he should be an engineer when he's older so he can build his own boy robot. Is v reassuring having a successful Aspie-ish role model for him.

With regard to your paed, as other people say, there may be more than just being on the spectrum going on, hence the more obs and tests the better. It's just another example of the randomness of diagnostic procedures up and down the country. We really need to get a MN campaign going to get the tests Sanctimoanyarse mentions available to everyone, even if their paed is not into labelling etc.

my son is now 6 and only got dx earlier this year . he has been under special needs at school and nursery since the age of 2. the girls at nursery thought he had adhd but after years of obs and sppech theray ( not lots as he can talk) our pead took ages to diagnose and we ever had someone higher than her to look at him. adhd has always been pushed to the back as i git told cahms dont look at the child until they are 6as that is the youngest age they can go on drugs for it x

but since he turned 6 weve had an appt with cahms and now things are going fast x

Mists- not wrong no, I knew my own two were asd before we took them to PAeds but yes, I am saying that she didn't follow gold standard diagnostic procedure (although if she had a SLT report, which may have included a play assessment, and did an ADOS / ADI-R at assessment she may well ahve been very close indeed; and how many get further than that?)

But tremember- I am both aprent and academic on ASD! Gold standard is what we learn about, what everyone should be aiming at. It's not something that happens often if ever. And it certainly doesn't mean a dx is incorrect- more lkely that subtle dx's will be missed or given; for example a secondary dyspraxia, missed because o no PT assessment.

Oh I see, that makes perfect sense Smile
