Which double buggy would suit a 3 and a 7 yr old?

Cos let's face it, that's how old they'll be when I'm still pushing them around!

New baby will still want a buggy ride at 3 ish, or 2.5 easily. Lottie is still nowhere near standing unaided let alone moving, bless her, so when she does start walking she's bound to be wobbly for a while, so she'll still the support of a buggy when she's about 6ish, maybe 7. So I want to get a buggy that will see them into those years.
Therefore an E3 no good for us.
Any other suggestions?
Light, as a 3 and a 7 yr old will weigh enough as it is.
Obviously comapct as we all know the nightmare of getting round shops and through doors with a bulky double buggy.

You are a loon! But big congratulations and hooray for being headhunted. Bet you feel fantastic about that - not that you don't deserve it 'cos you do.

motherinferior · 06/09/2005 23:38

Ooooh, home birth and all? Woohoo. Good for you, I can see you as a home birther.

Careful with moving jobs while up duff, can't remember what your maternity rights are. Just check them before doing anything definite.

Thomcat · 06/09/2005 23:41

oh the job thing probably won't happen anyway, they didn't know I was up the stick when they approached me, but they do now. They said it was cool, but I bet it isn't really.

Home birth, TC? Me too - all being well

Thomcat · 06/09/2005 23:46

Yeah, all being well, it's not set in stone, but that's the plan, if poss.
When are you due again?

we've looked into this in case we do have no.2 as Isla would also be in it till probly the same age as lottie the only one i found that would hols weight wise is the mountain urban double and it's actually the same width of the maclaren umbrealla fold.
I think this is the best option as it has the foot plate which will stop her feet keep taught / touching the wheels.

My dd doesn't fit in the mothercare urban detuor double - leg wise - her feet touch the front wheel.

HTH.

fairydust · 07/09/2005 07:29

and the jane powertrack - sorry not a chance her legs would get caught on the wheels - thats if she fitted in the seat - my friends dd (non sn) was onlt in it till 20months then it was to small.

chonky · 07/09/2005 08:17

What about a child carrier/ back pack for the new baby, once they get head control they'd be fine (and you could probably borrow a double buggy for them both for the first 6 months)?

littletrekkers

The link says that most carriers can carry a child up intil 4. Hard work I know, but you'd be mega mega fit

Jimjams · 07/09/2005 08:20

I used the instep nipper (am about to sell it- looks brand new), but Lottie would have to be a small 6 year old to fit in it. An advantage of it is that it can be pushed with one hand- so if she wants to walk/ride in the buggy when older she can do both.

It's the most compact 3 wheeler double buggy- fitted into our renaul megane boot OK and has always been able to go through the front door (our current house is quite wide- but it fitted in out last house which was smaller as well).

Jimjams · 07/09/2005 08:21

instep nipper here

clary · 07/09/2005 08:29

TC, I was thinkign about this for you the other day, bizarrely!
You can get our Instep Nipper, 3-wheeler, very light and strong, as a double which might be good. Oh I see that Jimjams recs it too, saves me lookign for a link then lol!
FWIW, I think you are beign pessimistic about baby no 2; by the time she/he is 2 you could probably have him/her on a buggyboard which would reduce the load. Or indeed Lottie will prob be able to use it before she is happy walkign as Aloha says.
In fact readign the thread I think I'm trying to say what she says (but puts it much better!)

clary · 07/09/2005 08:30

sorry about awful typing!

Jimjams · 07/09/2005 08:54

oh btw nipper is fine from newborn with an infant insert (cheapo thing that I used with ds2).

maddiemo · 07/09/2005 09:59

I use the Mothercare twin Urban Detour for my almost seven year old and almost four year old.

Ds3 is quite small though about 110cm and 18kg.

It is really easy to push but bulky, you would need a large car boot and I don't think you would be able to get it on a bus.

Thomcat · 07/09/2005 14:08

hi and thanks everyone.
it's not that I'm being pesimistic, just more practical really. I'd rather buy a buggy that will last just in case rather then buy 1 now and another later, that's all. I'd just rather buy a buggy to suit a 6/7 year old just in case, then I'm sorted, either way.
Early, early days i will put new abbay in carrier and use the single buggy for Lottie anyway, and then move into a double buggy that will see me throuhg the next 3 years like my single one has.

Thomcat - thanks for starting this thread, it's great. I asked the question on this board a while ago when I was TTC and got some good answers. However, now I'm actually pregnant with number 2 it's suddenly all very real! Like Lottie, it's highly unlikely that marley will be walking any kind of distance on her own in the next year or two so a suitable double buggy is the only option for us too.

After reading this thread, I'm definitely going to take her at some stage and test her leg length in all the double buggies I can find!

December really isn't that long off now is it? it seems to have gone so fast!

Merlot · 07/09/2005 15:04

Just thought I'd throw my two penneth in the melting pot:-

I know a couple of people have suggested the Nipper Instep.

I cant speak about the double buggy, but we have the single one. Ds2 has just outgrown it and he is 2! Admittedly he is very large (1 metre tall and 18 kgs - but the instructions say that it is really only appropriate for an averaged size 4 year old), and we are now looking at buying one of these

I dont know whether they do anything in a double - it might be worth an enquiry the guy who owns the company is really helpful
