Hi,
I am new to this forum. My daughter is autistic .she is 5 now. Our borough doesn?t provide statements. We are planning to try ABA. We contacted UKYAP. It is so expensive. I read some post here saying they get funding from LA. How did you get funding? what to do to get funding?
we are also planning to move from this place.
Can anybody tell me which are the best places to move in London, Essex, and surrey?
Thanks.

Every borough has to provide Statements, providing the SEN Code of Practice criteria is met: that the school can't meet your child's needs without a Statement.

No borough can refuse to provide Statements, though lots pretend not to 'do' them and lots make up fake criteria.

Contact IPSEA www.ipsea.org and download their 'request a statutory assessment' letter and use that.

and go Google the SEN Code of Practice and make it your Bible.

Having said that, getting ABA funded is a big ask and I know very few who've managed it.

Is she in school now?

Surely all boroughs have a duty to provide a statement? I am in suffolk and did get some partial funding for ABA, but it wasn't easy. I wouldn't say it was any better than anywhere else for SEN provision. I think all LEA fight gainst giving statements, then give crappy meaningless statements (another fight) and then fight about provision. Sorry to sound so negative, but that's been my experience. We had to go to a tribunal to try for funding for ABA and also had to fund it ourselves for a year to try and gather evidence that it worked for our dd. ABA is hideously expensive, it's very unfair. You can also try for funding from the Cauldwell trust - I did hear that some people have had funding through this charity, but you have to be under a certain income threshhold. Having said all of that, you will still need to get a statement for your daughter if you want to even try and get funding out of them. I would try getting in touch with an organisation like IPSEA to help you go through all the steps.

Great minds, cansu!

cansu · 26/09/2010 16:51

Yeah, we were both frantically typing at same time! It's terrible that people have to think about moving just to get bloody statement.

Bear in mind, your child does not need to be at school, or even school age, to get at Statement. We got full funding for ABA but that was many years ago at a time when our LA, and most others, had little or no ASD-provision. Times have changed which I suppose is good in theory but I think we would have very little chance of full funding for ABA here now (LB Camden). Another point is that, whatever has gone before, they do treat everyone as a new case ime which, in theory, is right but that's not why they do it of course. Also, with funding cuts who knows where is going to be "good"? My experience with this LA has been good overall and I have friends in other London boroughs. Barnet is OK, Haringey is OK (believe it or not!) but I would steer clear of Islington, Westminster OK, Southwark OKish. HTH.

Survey are bad in one respect, because they have good ASD provision, but we won, without tribunal in the end.

They are good in that if they do not have a place, they will pay for a private place. We won the panel meet for extra ordinary funding really easily - the bigger battle was getting the school we wanted named (although survey were happy to include 2 other ABA schools on their list to which dd1s papers effect sent...)

anonandlikeit · 26/09/2010 17:21

Should add - I'm not being a snob, I did like in Dagenham once, Grin

anonandlikeit · 26/09/2010 17:22

live... i lived not like in dag

silverfrog · 26/09/2010 17:44

Of course.my.post should read "surrey"... phone autocorrect on overdrive!

Spinkle · 26/09/2010 17:49

Another Sufolk bod and I have to say the LEA (also my employers...) have been very good. SEN Officer has been very very good to us.The school are a bit rubbish but I'm slowly nagging them.

Whoever told you the LA does not do statements is talking our the back of their head.

ovenchips · 26/09/2010 18:13

There is one ABA/VB school called Treetops School, which is a local authority school (Thurrock specifically) and is in Grays, Essex. www.treetopsschool.org/Hschinfo.html

I really can't tell you anything about how you would go about getting into it or indeed anything about it other than it exists!

I live at the other end of the country but know about it from my child's DAN style doctor. She visited it and was absolutely raving about it, thought it was really wonderful. She said if she were me she would move there immediately.

anonandlikeit · 26/09/2010 21:18

Hey Spinkle I wonder if we have the same lovely SEN officer?

goldfish7 · 27/09/2010 09:44

Thank you very much all.
I will talk to the school about statement. I will look ipsea as well.
Can anybody tell me about Wandsworth, Tower Hamlets ?

Hmmm, two London boroughs I know absolutely nothing about! Sorry. Have to say, LB Camden has also been great on social side, DPs etc.
