Hi Everyone,
DS1 is nearly 2 and has been seeing various specialists since just before he was 1. I began to notice he was behind when he was slow to lift his head - of course as soon as I took him to HV he did it perfectly! HV also said she wasn't concerned at 9mnths when he wasn't babbling - lots of sounds no consonants. Finally at 10 months, after getting advice from a friends mother who is a senior SALT, I took him to the GP and insisted be was referred.
He had an appointment with a paediatrician when he was just over a year who assessed him using the schedule for growing skills. From his she told us he was behind in speech (8 months stage at 1 year) but in all other areas he was on the late side of normal. He began to crawl the day before he was 13 months and was pulling up by 14/15 months and cruising quickly after. He was seen by paediatrician again at 18months, assessed in the same way with the same result. At this point he was referred to a physio as he was still not walking and had a blood test for muscular dystrophy that came back normal.
We finally had a SALT appointment at 21 months which found his feeding ability is fine although messy because he has low tone in his his muscles. She advised he had speech therapy from 2 (although I haven't yet been able to get an appointment).
Now at nearly 2 he can take between 4-8 steps alone and has seen the physio twice, who also believes he has low tone, yesterday though she told me she felt he needed a more through assessment of his development (Griffths assessment) as he had delays in more than one area.
DS1 is a delight, he has a few words: dada, mama (occasionally), car, nang-nang (requesting food or drink), attempts grandad, dudu (duck). He understands up and down, follows requests (when he feels like it!) copies and remembers actions that go with songs and books, loves books and vocalises and points to both request things and draw your attention to things he's interested in. He has no pretend play but does play with toys appropriately - pushes a car, posts toys in the post box etc. He doesn't build towers or do form boards/jigsaws. His hand-eye co-ordination isn't as great as he could be - he can self feed but struggles to scoop up food with a spoon but can lift the spoon place it and contents in his mouth and return the spoon to the bowl. He loves the ball helter-skelter but will often just chuck the balls at it even though he is able to place them in accurately.
I just feel that we're no further forward than we were a year ago, after a year of fighting for appointments and its making me frustrated and more than a little down, not helped by the fact I'm 37 weeks pregnant. Sorry for such a long one, but I wondered if anyone had experienced something similar?
