How many 1:1's in one class

DD has a 1:1 - almost full time (26 hrs per week). I know term hasn't long started but I get a feeling her 1:1 may be being used for other children in the class with difficulties. I was just wondering if there is a limit to how many 1:1's could be in one class of 30 children. I am probably not explaining this well but say for example another couple of children received a diagnosis and applied for a statment would the fact that my DD has a 1:1 have any impact on their application or DD's number of allocated 1:1 hours?

I would check the wording on your DD's statement, it mat well say access to 1:1 support which means that the TA doesn't have to only be with your DD, it is their way of saving money. There is no limit on how many 1:1's there can be in 1 class, if a child needs 1:1 support then they need it regardless of how many other children have it.

in ds ms last year reception , there was teacher plus ta, plus 2 1-1 for ds and another little girl .

Plus me for a term as they needed my help to interupt.

But make sure your statement specfies just how many hrs your dd has and yes sadly the 1-1 do get used elsewhere i saw this a lot and this was in full view of me they did not even try to hide it

it shouldn't make any difference - statemented 1-1 hours are for the individual child.

that said - in dd2's class there was another child with 1-1 in statement (both children ahd 15 hours each) so the school discussed it with both sets of parents and agreed it was sensible to provide a full time TA (or in actuality, two part time TAs) who would look after both girls. dd2 and her friend both had issues that required 1-1 for specific things, but not every minute, so to only have cover in the class for 15 hours would have been daft.

it worked really well. the TAs were used to supervise small group work with dd2/ her friend as well, so some other children benefited too.

as long as it isn't having a detrimental effect on the statemented child, i don't see any problem with the 1-1 including other children in some activities. it's not only sensible, it can help other children who haven't quite made it through the assessment process.

dd2 had for children with 1:1 at one point. in some circumstances its appropriate for the 1:1 to work with other children for example a child I worked with in th epast did speech exercises with another child which gave him social interaction (another target) and made him part of a group rather than always going out of the room on his own.

see ds needed his for lots of stuff including interupting but did do some group work withg him and one other dc as any more than that and ds would get left out while others talked to each other and over him.

Many a time ds needed help and the ta was busy or one time she was l;eft to read story while everyone else went on there breaks/meetings so class of 30 dc 2 with sn and one adult

The board (equiv. to LEA here) has capped TAs at 10 hours per statemented child. No child is getting more than this, apparently. Hmm. DS1's class has 2 assistants, one a general and one for a child with a statement who gets 10 hours. There is another child in the class who will be statemented soon, so she will be there for 20 hours then.

And she also has to support DS1 (at stage 3 - SA+) and another child in the class with SN.

Which is presumably why DS1 is coming out of school having not used the toilet all day.

Yeah see ds statement had the numbers of hrs in eventually going from 22 at first ending up at 34 so full time but even then she was being used elsewhere blatenley done as well

But ms did not work for ds he is now on language unit with 8 dc one teacher one lsa ft and a speech therapist. In 3 full days 2 1/2 days though few ds do cone in from the ms side just for theraphy

but there going to ask for extra hrs above placement as ds has addtional needs beyond speech so be intresting what Lea say to that

do think though after a year there likely to ask for placement change so will then argue for the PD school. Close by

LOL - there is no limit. My sister teaches the bottom set in secondary school. And for a class of 12 kids she would normally have about 6 adults :)

cansu · 22/09/2010 15:51

Crunchfrog - surely an arbitrary cap like this can't be legal?? Am shocked.

Eveiebaby · 22/09/2010 20:27

Thank you for all your responses really informative - thanks again

DD statement lists her difficulties and then says " in addition to the support provided from the delegated resources available to schools to address SEN the LA will provide 26 hours traching assistant support per week in a mainstream setting to implement the provision and learning outcomes above".

I did initially take this to mean that her support would be exclusively 1:1 but I can now see they it may well include other children.

I do not have a problem with other children being included in group activities as this will be beneficial to all concerned but I am anxious that maybe other childrens needs may be coming before DD's. She is settling in extremely well and does not have behavioural issues as such and I am just a bit concerned that she will be overlooked. It is early days and I may be getting on my high horse too soon Grin I guess it is just something I need to monitor.

that doesn't say 1-1 anywhere. it just says there'll be a TA available for 26 hours per week. it isn't even stating that this is an addition to the TA already in the class providing general support... i'd like to believe it's 1-1 support they meant, but it certainly doesn't say that.

i'd just keep an eye tbh - at the next iep review you can ask a few more specific q's. i wouldn't worry unless you do feel dd is not being supported. there's a lot of angst about 1-1, but if whatever they are doing is working (and it seems to be - you say she is settling in well etc) then i wouldn't be rocking the boat unnecessarily.
