School refusing to let ds have a drink

ds yr 2 asd, taken years to get ds up to 30 foods all together...was on 5!

Anyway ds cant drink milk as CFGF and actual milk allergy...under dietician and has px foods from GP.

Teacher would not let ds drink in class with other children today his normal drink of 'apple juice' in carton. So she sent ds out of class to drink it when this was the only 'play' time ds had in the 2 hrs he attends so missed play. Last year he was allowed to have his 'juice' but this year teacher says no so ds has to dehydrate!

What do I do? I am going to contact dietician tomorrow...is this discrimination too?

We have the same problem with dd1, she wont drink milk, she will drink water if she has to though. Would he drink flavoured water? i send it in with dd1 in a plain water bottle so the teacher thinks its water Grin.

Personally, I would say that is discrimination. If your ds cannot drink the same as the other children for medical reasons, he should be allowed an alternative/equivalent and not be made to feel different for it. There's no way he should be excluded from the class just because he has to drink a different drink.

If the teacher won't listen to reason, I would go over his/her head - head of year or head teacher maybe?

does your ds have a statement? one possibility is to get statement amended, if drinking/food issues not already mentioned.

we had this with dd1 at pre-school. she too is gf/cf.

agree go and talk to the head. your ds should not be being excluded for nto being able to have milk like all the others.

dd1's pre-schooll (once we had them onside) used to explain to the other children who wanted juice not manky luke-warm milk, that dd1 only had juice because milk made her tummy sore... it worked for them after a bit of talking about allergies etc.

We haven't encountered this yet as DS just starting nursery but I mentioned that he can't drink much at a time and so might need drink offered. Nursery teacher immediately said she wouldn't do this because then all the children would want a drink.

I do see her point but also thought to myself 'aye, that'll be right darlin.....'

ds is prone to kidney infections had to have scan last year due to them and will go all day without drink if not pushed to have one also. So this is great for his kidneys!

See my arguement was why didnt they complain last year if it's 'school policy' we have tried drinking water programme at home and ds would go the whole 7 hrs of therapy without a drop in boiling temps...I give in then as ds hasnt drank and sweating etc all day!

I would be making it clear that your ds is unable to drink same as others due to his ASD. It is obvious that school should be making adaptations to their rules to accomodate his needs. At dd2's ms school, the children are only allowed water, but there was no problem when I explained dd2 would only drink diluted juice. Teacher asked me to send it in in non see through bottle so other kids wouldn't cotton on which was no problem. Go and talk to the head if teacher being difficult.
