I don't use it much, so doubt I will bother, what shame

well I won't be paying

I don't think that £10 as a one-off lifetime subscription is a massive expectation though, and it is all being ploughed back into SKITUK resources. If it was an annual thing, I'd agree, but £10 for lifetime membership? I think that is ok. They have said that people who find £10 hard to find can negotiate longer payment terms.

donkeyderby · 19/09/2010 20:29

I joined the forum ages ago, but find this more accessible (maybe because I've got used to it). Apart from the forum and the occasional meet somewhere innaccessible, what do SKITUK offer? I've never quite worked it out but I would be pleased to pay £10 if it was worth it.

r3dh3d · 19/09/2010 20:59

What is the £10 for? I'm persona non grata on there so I can't go and investigate.

kidsncatsnwine · 19/09/2010 21:02

They subsidise meet ups if 3 or more (I think that's the number) members wish to organize a meet. They organise and massively subsidise the main summer camping meet which gives anyone who wishes, the opportunity to spend up to a week with their fellow SN campers .. the camps ARE accessible and the volunteers who run SKITUK spend an awful lot of time and energy trying to find the best place. This years was totally accessible, offered static caravans as well as camping for those who preferred/needed it.
The change over is because as a charity, not just a forum, certain legal requirements had to be met and the forum is now (unlike this one) secure.. very important when many of the members care for looked-after children. They offer a big mac switch lending service as well as an awful lot of info , from how to seek charity funding, to being able to talk to the professionals who supply w/c services on the forum.
Personally (and no I'm not a trustee!!) I think that's a pretty fair deal for lifetime membership. Two bottles of wine's worth....:D

2shoes · 19/09/2010 21:13

but I don't want to go to meet ups or camping, I just wanted to help and get advice.
and tbh I don't want to pay £10 to help some one go on a meet up(wonders if mn would put some money if for our meet ups)

Well the public forum is still alive and well....so you can continue to do that. The Registered charity members bit is simply more secure for those who wish to be active (ie voting etc) charity members...so don't feel you can't continue to use the forum,,you can:)

feelingbetter · 19/09/2010 21:49

But there is still a public forum you can use without paying anything.

It's just really empty coz it started as a clean sheet (so to speak) this morning.

2shoes · 19/09/2010 21:51

oh didn't know that, but the idea of being part of a them and us system(them that pay and those that don't) defeats it for me

OP posts:
ShadeofViolet · 19/09/2010 22:04

I prefer it here - I never felt like I fitted over there.

2shoes · 19/09/2010 22:06

i know what you mean, it is very friendly, I always get a reply, but... I don't feel at home, maybe cos I don't live and breathe sn, so prefer here where there is loads of other stuff

can't imagine it would, as it takes up masses of room(although a friend once had a very compact one) ss would have to supply it I assume.

the big difference at the moment is that
i must admit i do post more there than here now to be honest, probably because i have now met a lot of them and we are planning a few get togethers over the coming months etc

not sure yet about the new forum, taking me a while to get used to the new layout! Grin

there are about 145 verified members now as opposed to the 3300+ members before, mostly people who had joined up but never posted and they didnt really know who anyone was

they had to do the verified bit to comply with the charity status and we now all have voting rights etc.

we have never been to the annual camp as it was always the weekend before the scottish schools went back but they are possibly bringing it forward this year to let the scottish members attend.

i paid the £10 as TBH ive probably benefited from more than that already as they subsidised our last trip to the Calvert centre which was fab and we are planning another trip this easter.
they have adapted lodges with hoists and wetrooms so dont need to worry about lifting/bathing etc

glittery · 20/09/2010 12:06

oooh my first line got a bit displaced there! it was supposed to be at the 145 members bit...im blaming this shitey netbook im having to use as my big laptop died at the weekend Sad

2shoes · 20/09/2010 12:09

so the £10 is to help other people do stuff?
