AS and tummy trouble.

I have a 7 year old boy who has aspergers. He has terrible pain in his lower abdomen, almost daily. Its not constant, but will be 2 or 3 times bad enough for him to roar loudly. He was admitted to hospital when he was 5 with acute tummy pain, but no cause was found and he went home pain free after 4 days. I'm new to the whole world of aspie children, but I have heard about the possible connection with tummy trouble. Anyone got any ideas? I fear the doctor thinks I am just looking for medical problems (blush)

Is he constipated?

It could be an intollerance to something (gluten, dairy)?

I spent most of my childhood at the gp and hospital with stomach pains and no cause was found, now i have worked out it is linked to what i eat.

You could keep a diary of what he eats and when he gets the pain to see if its linked to his diet.

If he's anything like my dd1 (AS) it could be due to a very limited diet which causes constipation.

My 12 yr old is the same, only he doesn't suffer daily, he can go for two months or so with out any problems.
He has Aspergers traits. ( Diagnosis taken away last year).

I'm starting to think it's something to do with too much wheat. I noticed he had massive cramps once when he'd had wheatabix for breakfast and supper one day, and today's bout I'm putting down to having 6 slices of bread on Thursday. ( Poached egg on two slices white bread for breakfast, ham sandwich for packed lunch and his dad made him bacon sarnies in the evening)

Have given him calpol today and heat pads to place on his tummy. It only lasts for half a day, but that half a day is agony for him.

I'm calling the GP on Monday to see if we can get to the bottom of it. Don't think its constipation as he goes fine in-between bouts.

OP Have you had any answers???

buy some straws when you get them, easiest way to get to drink it but it is very sweet so never a problem here :)

have a look at www.treatingautism.co.uk - loads of stuff about difference change of diet can make - casein free gluten free helps quite a few people (but not all). friends son saw one of the practicioners listed on that site and (while it was not cheap) they have have seen lots of positive things come from it.

Will do - thanks

We tried a gluten free diet four years ago but didn't keep it up Blush one of the excuses reasons for this was lack of support from GP and school.
Can you point me in the right direction of a web site with weekly menus and ideas for family meals which would support this diet?

Also, can anyone recommend a vitamin pill ( child friendly) with Zinc and omega oils?
I feel quite guilty for knowing all this yet putting it on the back burner.

Anything that would help my son's concentration would help him out a lot in school and could mean him not being considered different, for having a TA ( 1 to 2)

I am with you on the guilt for not going with what may help! Our child psych keeps pushing the fish oils but I keep foretting to give them.
