OMG ds3,4.3, asd, sld and adhd has just been brought back by a neighbours son.
We where in the living room watching a film and I must have dropped off, he doesn't sleep very much. I was woken up by a knock on the door. It was my neighbours son with ds3. He was halfway down the street, thank god it is a quiet side street. He had climbed over the safety gate, opened the front door and was out. When I got over the shock I looked at my watch and it was only 10 mins since the last time I looked.

Glad he was returned home so quickly. No one can be on duty 24/7 so don't feel guilty but maybe there are more 'fail safe' locks that you can get ?

jjones · 18/09/2010 18:03

I am going to speak to ot and sw on monday because I can't find anything that will go on my stupid upvc front door.

jjones, you can get alarms that simply stick on, and alert you when the door is opened.

Would that be any help?

We have had to get an electromagnetic lock because DD1 did exactly what your DS did, but we live 200 yards from a main road Shock

kerpob · 18/09/2010 19:14

that happened to my ds with asd - also aged just over four! he opened our front door which had two locks on it while i was changing the other's nappy. my heart stopped i can tell you - also kids from the street found him and went after him to bring him back. we now use a stranger chain on the door at all times as well as chubb lock. you can use stranger chain on upvc doors as far as i know. i was shaking for hours after it - don't be too hard on yourself, now you are forewarned about how ingenious he can be in terms of escape!

saintlydamemrsturnip · 18/09/2010 19:15

We have a deadlock (removeable key) for this reason. Can you get one of those locks where you have to pull the handle up? They lock with removeable keys.

tallwivglasses · 18/09/2010 19:36

Poor you. I also share a house with a little escapologist. They can do a lot in 10 minutes, can't they?

Do speak to your sw. If you're not getting enough sleep maybe they can offer you some respite/support?

jjones · 18/09/2010 22:45

Thanks, the way my front door in positioned, it is on a right angle with the wall on both sides, we can't use a chain or anything like that.
Lougle where can you get those alarms from. As for respite, there is no such thing for under 5's here which is ridiculous.
kerpob I know what you mean, I was completely shell shocked as he has never even tried to do anything like that before.

Here for £4.99 I know it is shown side mounted, which might cause you a problem, but you could top-mount it instead, so that the alarm stuck on sideways at the top of the door, and the slim section above the door.

DS(ASD, 5) did that whilst I was brushing DD's teeth and DH was in the shower. As he never tried to escape before, we did not think twice about leaving the key on the side cabinet. And it was good 10 mins before I came down stairs with DD to find the front door wide open. Luckily he went for the nearest play ground which was next to the mosque and as it was a Friday, our security guard for the compound was there praying (we live in U.A.E). Although I could not understand much of what the guard said, I could figure out that he was running around on the road trying to get out of the way of approaching cars. I also found him once in the swimming pool on his own whilst I went to the toilet. The maid left the lock open, he noticed and waited for me to be out of the way. This was before he learnt to swim and only reason he was not in the pool because water was a bit cold and he decided to float on his paddling boat instead.

Two days ago, DD (NT) was brought back by the same security guard (our guardian angel it seems. Apparently she was already on her way to the main road to Dubai when he heard a car beeping and looked up to see why. DD said she saw DH leaving with DS and went to look for them. I was on the phone to my sister in law and did not realise the maid was watering the plants, so she did not hear her leaving the house. We have already put chain lock on the doors, but it seems that there is no opportunity for a single mistake.

Lougle, great idea about alarms, I think I am going to get some too.

jjones · 19/09/2010 16:12

Thanks Lougle will keep checking for them to come in stock.

We have removable mortice key locks on all doors and windows as we have an escape artist too. we also have the simple barrel locks on internal doors (kitchen etc) for when ds wanders around at night and we are so shattered.

We have the magnetic alarms for when we go to anyone elses houses.

tiredmummyoftwo · 20/09/2010 06:11

Lougle, is internet the only place you can buy this alarms? I can't get delievered to the U.A.E, dh is the UK for business at the moment he looked at homebase and B & Q and could not find it.
