Significant expressive language disorder?

This is what it says in ds latest SALT report Sad

Is it pretty bad if they use the word "significant"?

It also says he has a speech sound disorder.

Are these linked to ASD?
Thanks

I cant really offer any answer to your question but my DD, nearly 5, just got initial dx ASD and was reffered to SALT....no reports yet but concerned about her 'understanding of language'....she struggles to make proper sentences other than those memorised from films.

How old is DS?

What have they suggested?

Does he have a dx/traits of ASD?

Hopr your ok, I hate the reports.

Hi woolytree, He is 4. They have suggested that visual is the way to go, and that language needs to be simplified.

We are towards the end of a SA for him, He does have many traits of ASD. I have had a verbal diagnosis now of ASD and ADHD, plus he has GDD and SPD.

God I hate the reports too Sad It is really awful seeing it in black & white. We are currently under CAHMs after seeing Paeds for 18mth. The Paeds haven't assessed him as he just doesn't interact with them at all.

We only have verbal dx too, SALT also suggested using visual aids/timetable too, DD talks a lot but makes no sense a lot....and reverts to Toy Story or Mickey Mouse...with voices/accents frequently. I was looking at the idea of possible SPD??

Im about to apply for SA but am not sure we will get it...new school keep saying shes doing well, settling in better than expected. I just feel uneasy, its a big class, she doesnt know how to explain feelings, stores her anxieties until she gets home....then is really spaced out. :(

Weve only been to combined clinic once, but are back on fri...didnt get enough info last time, mainly SALT.

What visuals are you going to use? I love ASDvisualaids.com ....but its a bit pricey! Shock

Significant does mean on the severe side imo
DS has a dx of asd and speech and language disorder (he is nearly 5).
Last year on entry at the language unit he attended, they said he had significant delays, now a year down the line they say it is moderate. Does your son has regular access to SALT?
I'm convinced that if DS hadn't spent a year at the lang.unit he wouldn't have made the progress he has. It is worth pushing hard for SALT.

Good luck with the assessments.

Hi have ds5 with severe speech disorder and severe sounds which translates as struggles to make sounds mostly nouns as well as struggles with words

But he does not have any signs of asd but does have other issues going on

Pucca maybe speech unit way to go though be warned if anything other than speech is officially dx on paper can make harder to fight for place

I had to prodeuce private speech reports which showed it was ds biggest problem (thank you Ican)

and file for tribunal before they backed down

Hi, in our case ds2 (9) has severe s&l difficulties, we continue to work with salt (he is in s & L unit attached to mainstream school) on phonological awareness, expressive grammatical skills, expressive semantic skills, information processing skills, group work - he also has a dx of asc and adhd. He went to ICAN and then straight into speech and language unit which has been brilliant x

Thanks everyone,

Sorry for sounding very stupid but what is a speech unit exactly?

In our case, it was a SN classroom for under 5 that was set into the grounds of a MS school.
There were from 8 to 10 childrem max attending each session. It was run by 2 specialist teachers, a TA and 2 SALTS (the salts were sharing the days).
So very high staff/pupil ratio, which was brilliant.
All children were fully assessed on s&l on entry, and again at the end of the year.
They had s&l specific IEPs and staff were working hard to get them to reach their individuals targets.
DS made huge progress while he was there. I was so sad Sad when his placement finished last July.

pucca · 15/09/2010 22:14

Thanks genie, I don't think they have anything like that at the school ds is at, or anywhere nearby. Sounds brilliant though. Smile

I wasn't aware of the small unit DS attended until his SALT mentioned it either. Maybe worth checking out, you never know.
Ours was called 'Early learning group', they are for pre-schoolers only, and i found out there are 2 of these in our city.

pucca · 15/09/2010 22:22

Ah ok, brilliant, I will check it out...Thanks again Genie Smile

Hi ds tried a ms school one term in reception even with statement showed he was not learning going with it

we moved and took while to sort new statement out as I was afnant ds not attending ms so I found Sn nursery by mencap and sent him there ,only doable because ds was not 5 till July

thanks to ican it was finally agreed ds to attend speech unit .I went and saw everyone in county and found right one for ds luckily lea agreed though not closes was only one could meet needs ,He started in year 1 this September

Go checkout units they all differ how much time the d. Spend in unit in the day .His is attached to ms .Ds is 100% in the unit have own playground lunch area etc .Though they do go in playground after the other dc in.This works well for ds as he has other issues going on and would get lost in big class

There's 8 dc one teacher one lsa one salt
