SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

I am going to broach statements with DS's support worker today.

But I have no idea what to say, and no idea why I am so nervous.

She has been a real godsend to us, and I dont want to upset her, but I know that she is going to try and talk me out of it as Nottinghamshire dont like doing statements.

I dont even really know how to explain why I want a statement, I know why in my head, but I cant seem to get it out without sounding like a thicko.

I am such a mess Blush

Nerves are understandable but sod feeling at all guilty about "upsetting" DS's support worker; after all is said and done you are your child's best - and only - advocate. She is also there to help you and your family, not potentially talk you out of applying for a Statement.

Would suggest you write down the reasons why your DS needs a Statement and go through these with this person.

Statements are still being issued by LEAs even if they don't like issuing the things on cost grounds. If you feel your DS needs a Statement basically say that you're going to apply yourself for such a document.

In this regard IPSEA are helpful and their website is a mine of information.

As usual I was worrying about nothing - she basically said it was up to me what I did, although lots of children with SN do start MS without a statement it was my choice.

She is going to speak to the Ed Psych for the school and do a joint visit.
