www.annarbor.co.uk has been recommended to me, has anybody used any of their resources... I'm looking for anything that will help ds2 tolerate looking at text as he has visuall stress/perception difficulties.
Thanks anon

Ummm, not quite sure what bit of it has been recommended to you. (Not that I've used any of it)

I presume you've tried the obvious stuff?

  • BABO / Vision Therapy
  • Irlen syndrome ( Coloured glasses or overlays)

My boy has huge visual perception difficulties yet for some reason this doesn't affect his reading - although he can't read off the whiteboard very well.

He does use overlays, with mixed results. He isn't able to give accurate responses to the questions during assessment to figure out how to best help him.
he cannot read or write at all.
I think it was recommended as a good source of resources & info.
I guess I need to know what i'm looking for firts though ?
I'll hve a look at BABO, thanks.

How old is he? Sounds terrible :( You have my sympathies.

I'm not actually sure how my son can read so well because he has very bad visual perception difficulties - so it is possible.

anonandlikeit · 14/09/2010 17:32

He's almost 8 but is still at pre school level for reading & writing.

Ohhhhh. That must be so distressing for all of you.

So he doesn't know his letters yet? And you think that is because of a vision problem?

anonandlikeit · 14/09/2010 18:37

No not just visual probs, he does have Learning difficulties, ASD & mild CP. But his understanding is age appropriate, his maths while a bit behind is much better.

His assessment for ed psych & statement put him at pre school level, I recon he is probabily reception level. He can recognise indiviual letters (lower case) and say the phonic sound but beyond that he's stumped.

We are looking for some way of helping, if possible. Not sure what i'm looking for really, school are plodding on with lots of repitition but he can only cope with work in very very tiny chunks, due to lots of visual discomfort.

Anon, Just saw this on another post:

Indigo, I'm so happy this has worked for you. I am a behavioral/developmental optometrist in the US and we test all of our therapy patients for retained reflexes. So far only one has not had a problem. It is practically a given that if they have visual processing issues they have sensory and retained reflex issues too. I wish more therapy programs included this.

So, I guess that is a recommendation for you to investigate retained reflexes therapy as well as BABO. If you're in London you could try the Sound Learning Centre

anonandlikeit · 15/09/2010 16:34

I need to read up on retained reflexes, thanks for that.
