Not going NEAR AIBU with this..

Wondered what you all thought.

DD cannot really speak. Got phone call from nursery on Monday saying she had been sick, so picked her up. She seemed fine so took her again on Tuesday (nursery said I could if it wasn't a bug..she is sick when she cries). She started screaming and was sick again.

So took her to GP, her ear was a bit sore. Otherwise she was well except at nursery.

She seemed 100% fine this morning, gave her some Calprofen anyway in case her ear is sore, but she got upset when she saw the nursery street, and then cried when she went in (she usually loves it). She was totally 100% well earlier though.

So..was I being harsh to leave her there? I am beating myself up in case she is ill and I didn't realise as she can't speak.

Do anyone else's DC get clingy at school/nursery when they have been ill?

TIA.

I had the same problems with DD when she was younger and unable to tell me she was ill. You have already done all you can re medicine/gp. Nursery will call you if she shows any other symptoms. No YANBU.

DD always had ups and downs and clingy times but overall loved it!

Yes, the GP said DD wasn't even unwell, just had a slightly sore ear. I gave her antibiotics as i could see her getting more bunged up and that always precedes a very sore ear. They seem to have kicked in anyway.

It's hard isn't it..she hardly ever has clingy times and usually loves it, so it's a new thing for me.

I just felt bad and her 1:1 looked concerned and clearly thought she might still be ill, which made me feel worse.

DH is away for rest of week so I was going to be struggling to cope without her at nursery too!

You have covered all bases by taking her to the GP.

I am in the same boat as you. DS is verbal but its all echolia, not language as such. He also makes himself sick when he is upset and desnt like going to preschool.

I think you have done the right thing.

She might be ill. But unless my lads are very ill or have sickness and diarrhoea I tend to let them go to school as the expected routine usually makes them able to cope more than if I have to keep them home with me and take them food shopping, for example.

Thanks Smile

When I left I could see her flapping happily and drawing, then i phoned to ask if I should pick her up earlier and they said she was fine..going 30 minutes earlier anyway.

Just didn't want to go down the road of keeping her off as then it would be harder to settle her, too.

I hope she does speak eventually!!

My DD just had a S and L assesment (nearly 5) she only spoke random single words at nursery...well apparently hardly said a word in front of other children but babbled for me! As she got older she began repeating, funny voices ...mainly mimic films. I havent got to the bottom of her speech issues but the doc said...'She will speak!'. Those words just keep ringing in my ears. :)

Dont worry...nursery will ring if she needs you. I agree keeping her off would just upset your routine. I hope her ear feels better....Id be upset if her 1 to 1 didnt look concerned, at least they will keep an extra special eye on her! :)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/09/2010 10:50

Yes, she has been really nice throughout, I am pleased with all the nursery staff!

It's hard to know if my DD will speak..she had hundreds of extremely clear words at 2.5 then within a week they disappeared and she just spoke in a garbled, slurred voice, still don't know why. Now at 3.10 the odd word comes out, and a lot of jargoning.

My DD had a slurred voice, loss of words when we finished term before summer...it took a month to come back, we'd not had that before. She recently managed some sentences but not responsive to direct questions or in conversation. Hmm

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/09/2010 11:07

it's awful isn't it.

The SALT thinks it could be because she was just parrotting before and now she has to THINK about what she is saying she is finding it hard, which makes sense a little.

OP posts:
woolytree · 08/09/2010 11:11

I guess Ill see when we start SALT! DCs sound similar though on tha speech front. :)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/09/2010 11:12

yes, so you will know how frustrating it is!

Still, I have become a good interpreter! DD can't use signs as she has severe motor planning problems, which also made PECS impossible.

OP posts:
woolytree · 08/09/2010 11:16

We were advised to start using PECS, I thought it was for non verbal DCs before......Will give it a try, when Im out of denial!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/09/2010 11:19

It seems really good, DD couldn't pick up the cards though!

And don't be put off, it apparently brings on their speech if it works!

Phew, went to get DD and she was sitting quietly finger painting, then I got a great welcome and she was really happy and smiling at all the staff as usual!

Oh thats great. Grin

Just got DD, shes finding full days exhausting, wets herself on the walk home (again) and doesnt/cant tell me anything about school.....and they keep giving her chocolate, someones birthday two days in a row!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/09/2010 16:45

Oh dear. I hope she is enjoying it too though!

Poor DD just got sick from coughing again after she woke from nap and then was crying and poking her ear, so she is obviously still not 100%, she was clearly being very brave at nursery this morning! (or hopefully she was just a bit sore after lying down!)

OP posts:
woolytree · 08/09/2010 23:27

Hope shes feeling better tomorrow. :)
