Can I just ask how much they take daily? DS was due to go up to 9ml twice daily after being discharged from hospital but he was doing well on 7ml so his neurologist said to leave it there and see how he got on. He has done really well on it and he has had no seizures which is great.

It was June we last saw the consultant and are due back in a couple of weeks but DS is starting to display some strange behaviours again so think maybe his dose needs upping. Think it is worked out on weight and I am sure he has put some on over the last few months.

Just don't want to be giving him too much but don't want seizures returning either. Its a bit of a nightmare Confused trying to get the balance right.......

Currently on 5ml twice daily, most likely increasing to 6ml. He's only 7 months and about 9kg though and I am not sure it's working for us.

Thanks surreal - DS was started on 4.5ml in hospital and 9ml was where he was due to go to but 7ml seemed to be doing the job. But think maybe we are needing a bit more than that now. Don't want him to be tired with it too much tho.

The dosage depends on the age and size of your child.
My dd takes 7.5 mls 3 times a day (7.30 am, 1.30 pm and 8.30pm). Her weight is about 20kg.

They introduced a 3rd dose because they couldn't increase the other amounts any more. But this now means that she needs to be given medication at school!

Sorry for posting twice am still a bit new to this !

Thanks all. Turns out DS was developing an infection in his throat and being new to the whole epilepsy management thing we weren't aware that something so simple can knock him off his stott.

I spoke to our epilepsy nurse who recommends that any time he is unwell we should up his dose by 20% and then take back down again. Now on 8ml twice daily.

DS is about 26kg so he has room for manouvre if we need it.

How do you find tegretol for your DD crazymum?

Tegretol does work well for my dd and this has been the case for several years. Tends to have a seizure only once a year or so.

Yes infections can increase seizure risk but have found that if illness causes loss of appetite then she gets very drowsy after taking the medication so am not sure about taking extra. Also give calpol at first sign of a temperature.

Getting the medication right isn't an exact science though. Usually the hospital keep it the same unless there has been a large growth spell or another seizure. They don't like to give large doses if it's not needed.
