How can you prove a social skills delay?

Ed psych may do a verbal comprehension test this term, but I think social skills intervention is more pressing. He has made strides but it's clear to me that the gap is widening. Superficially, with motivation, clear expectations, in a low stim or familiar environment he copes (ish). Otherwise he melts down tho he's learning to hide his distress in school & wait till pickup.

He's almost 7, I'd guess he'd be on par with an average 4y old... but he's good at remembering rules (lol) which masks things somewhat. I'm familiar with centiles for weight, language etc. Is there any better way of demonstrating the delay other than my largely unsupported assertations?

DD2 had a course of play therapy assessment as part of her multi-disciplinary assessment. This took place at a clinic, with a small group of children, a play therapist and and a child psychiatrist. I think the results of this were what made them go "Yes, she definitely does have Asperger's", in other areas she was quite borderline really.

I don't know what condition your son has/is being assessed for, sorry - not been here much recently. You struck a cord with me though, because my main concerns with DD2 are her social and emotional naivety.

Other than being observed in a group setting with someone who really knows what they are doing, can't think of anything else. You are striking a chord with me as well - as a mother's fimbling feeling seems to count for very little when your child does OK at school, on formal language testing and is quite passsive.

Thanks guys, that's kind of what I guessed, but I was just hoping someone somewhere wd have a weblink to an easier option.

actually it might be worth you googling for "pragmatics profile", as that looks at how language is used etc, but might be a bit basic for your DS at his age...

Ta for that TotalChaos. There is a primary age version. I don't know what a NT same age parent wd put, but he does seem to have problems in most of the areas. Oddly enough I think he'd look quite ok for the section on abstract conversations about death, God etc!
