Went to the hospital today as ASD DD1 had toothache and needed a tooth out. As she freaked at the dentist he sent here here. Anyway, turns out she needs 6 extracted under general. I'm a bit in shock... She does steal sugary things and hates teeth-brushing- Has this happened to any of you?

I blogged about it in case anyone's into blogs strange-beau.blogspot.com

Really sorry for you both. I haven't had this experience yet but it could / will probably come up as have had problems with teeth brushing with ds in the past and he eats loads of chocolate. He has recently started to accept toothbrush but only after i asked his school to help. They then started brushing his teeth at lunchtime - this has helped loads.

Hi, we have had this problem. Ds has never brushed his teeth and last year had to have 12 out.
He is also down syndrome with a heart condiditon and at risk of endochartitis, a fatal disease caused by bacteria in the mouth.
We were told surgery would be 45 mins, though 3 hours later we were needed again to keep him calm.
As for checks done before the op, blood pressure etc....none were done as he hit and kiced out and banged his head off the tiled floor. So theu done it on the basis he was fighting fit plus the fact he has surgery where the cardiologists are.
However after the op, it looked like he had about 4 teeth left and his mouth was full of stitches, within a couple of days he had pulled the stitches out, so maybe be aware of this.
A year later he's still not brushing his teeth and they are all starting to come in.
HTH, anything else you want to know just ask, x

DS is only 3 and has some decay on his two front teeth, I feel so bad about it but I just cant make him brush them - he hates things near his mouth and gags on a toothbrush.

He goes to a SN dentist but he hasnt actually opened his mouth yet :(

Gawd, I'm glad I'm not the only one, but I can't help thinking, especially from reading what you've written Riven, that the hospital is making some sort of value judgment about us- ie SN kid, so doesn't really matter, whip them all out...hmmmm. I'm phoning my dentist who referred us (for 1 extraction) to ask what he thinks.

Devientenigma, that sounds like a complete trial!! thanks for the info, I was worried about all that- seems like they have no clue about how to deal with SN kids....I'll give you a shout when we get nearer the date..

..this all had me in tears this morning...

I mean, it's hard enough for her to be autistic, without ending up with shitty teeth because someone couldn't be bothered to treat her...basically there are 2 abscesses and 4 'large holes'...i dont' know why they can't fill the holes?

hmmmmmm
