School Action Plus - what help will DD get??

DD is starting MS primary school next year. At our last physio we were told they would be looking at funding for School Action Plus when she starts.

DD has physical difficulties due to brain injury - she's not considered disabled but has low muscle tone/fluctuating tone which affects her movement and co-ordination. She has poor balance and manipulative skills.

Does anyone have this level of support for their DC's in school? I guess it is tailored to individual children but wondered how much help she's likely to get with things like writing/PE?

School action plus does not come with any extra funding (as far as I know). All it means is that specialists come in to see her. But it does not say how many or how much. So it could be anything from one visit from an OT a year...

If the school can not provide enough help for her from within their resources, than she needs a statement.

There will probably be a TA attached to the class who will be helping the whole class at PE. If this isn't enough for your DD then you need a statement.

I could also imagine a TA spending 10 minutes a day doing handwriting help with her. Again if this is not going to be enough you will need a statement.

This is all just my experiences, so possible your school / LEA is different. :)

It used to be an hour a week 1:1. I am sure the school will give her more support than that if they think she nees it.
However someone will be on here before too long to tell you top apply for a Statement of Eucational Needs which would give her considerably more. Checkout the IPSEA website for more information.

Depends on the school. Dd2 has being having 15mins a day but that seems to be good from what I've seen on here

It used to be the recommendation from our LA, but obviously it is down to the school and does depend on what the time is being used for. Most children got a lot more help over the course of a week becaue we had a full time TA in each class. I have done supply in schools which still have limited TA time, where children are taken out for sessions but there is little or no support in class. Just depends on the school and how they use their resources.

Thanks all! This is all very new to me so it's useful to get an idea of what this might mean. Will check out that website.

It's a small village school so I think they will do what they can with the resources they have. My DS is already there and I know they will be supportive. DD is extremely independent and probably won't want much help with anything but I really don't want her to struggle..
