Just found out my son's IQ

I have been fostering him since he was 9 months, he has fetal alcohol syndrome. He is the sweetest most loving bright happy little boy.
He has been struggling at school and as he has just turned 6 they did a whole heap of tests on him so they could get more funding.
His IQ came out at 67. I knew he had his struggles but didn't expect this.
Am so sad.

He is the sweetest most loving bright happy little boy.

And is still is - whatever the number of his IQ.

No point in having a high IQ if you are miserable and unpersonable.

You are both right. I am a single parent and didn't have anyone to talk sense at me. Thank you

We all get down from time to time. Having a kid with SN requires a great deal of steely determination and energy. Stands to reason we all have a wobble now and again.

It IS allowed!! Grin

Can I say that my son has also been struggling at school and recently had various tests. The IQ bits came back with a high score. Sadly he is not a bright happy little boy.

I am only saying this to try and demonstrate that there are so many facets to having a good life and a high IQ is not a requirement. It your son is happy, it sounds like you already have enough of them covered.

As someone else said, IQ also only measures a particular kind of intelligence and there are many others.

Recently found out DS(6) IQ was 54 but he is still the most adorable little boy!

Took us a few weeks to get past the numbers and focus on finding his positive areas, still looking but I know we will find them.

You too will find the positives, it is hard to begin with but he is still your happy, loving little boy and I bet he gives you so much joy Smile that numbers will soon mean nothing.

just wondered how you went about having his iq tested? thanks

colditz · 24/08/2010 21:42

Nicest (and one of the wittiest!) woman I know told me last year, with much ribald guffawing, that her measured iQ is 80.

I went to school with her. She didn't do spectacularly, but she does bring up 3 kids on a shoestring, she does know exactly how hard to tease so it's funny and never hurtful, and she has the knack of The Faces. Think Les Dawson in his old woman garb. She's hilariously good company.

She's a lovely person, and the fact that there is a 60 point difference in IQ between us means absolutely Fuck All, neither of us feel it at all. She's a nice woman having a nice life and (importantly) spreading the niceness around. She's just my mate from school (primary school, I've know her 25 years!)

And (and I know you might be worried about this so I'll be blunt) she doesn't sound remotely thick, and never has. There's only a 13 point difference between her and your son.

Thanks for all you encouragement, I am feeling heaps better today.
Pokhara - in Australia it is done at school as part of his special needs assessment.

Despite the result of his IQ test I think you should remember that many children take a while to get going at school, I used to work with year 2 children age 6 and 7 and you would be amazed how many of them literally took off during this year or the next. Our children are pushed into education much too early imo and you may find that his learning accelerates in the next few years. Give him time to be a happy little boy and see what happens from there.

ds had his IQ done a year ago as part of his transition to the adult team, came out at 67 but despite this he has achieved some access 3 levels in high school IQ tests prove nothing as they don't test the right areas so I wouldn't about it.
