videoing 4 yr old child in nursery for assessment?

anyone else had this experience?

my sons keyworker informed us today she has been videoing him to let the educational psychologist assess him. he is 4 and has autism and does not speak.

thinking about it now we are pretty annoyed and are going to ask them to stop. we feel they are trying to get his "best bits" in order to make a case for not deferring him. we want to defer him a year, they dont.

they never even asked us!

are we being oversensitive? is this common practice?

just interested in what others thought!

You need to sign a consent form for them to film him & they must declare what they are to sue any photos or films for, if they ahve not done this then they MUST stop.
Some nurseries have a blanket form that you sign when registering that covers all this sort of thing, so just check first that you ahve not signed one already without realising.
That said, you are prefectly within your rights to refuse.
Surely an EP should be doing her own observations rather than using someone elses footage.
I know psych sometimes film assessment sessions to look back at a childs reaction & assess more fully but that is usually a controlled clinincal environment.

yes i did sign a consent form for photos to be taken for, say use in the local press. but surely this is completely different?

and thats what i thought about ed psych.
she should be doing direct observations if she wants to assess him.

They should have ssked you to sign a consent form . Agree with Anon that even by the poor standards of the profession, assessing by video is unacceptable. You must be very blunt that you want to defer and that is that !

I work in a pre school and we definatly would not be allowed to do this without the parents permission. Even then I don't know why you would need to surely careful observations and documentation of the childs difficulties should be acceptable. I would tell them to stop immediatly and possibly even request the videos.
If the ED pysch wants to see him he/she should go and see him.

It depnds on what the small print says about permission to use video material - but withdraw consent now and ask for proper EP assessment
