Hi, have been thinking a few times about the assessment day when we got the dx of autism for my ds.
I remember paed asking some questions relating to asthma, or allergies in the family...Hmm

Well we have plenty of these in the family. And on both sides.
DS2 (asd) has not got asthma , nor any allergies apart from a bad reaction to penicillin once.

But DS1 (nt) for a start had childhood asthma and eczema, and a mild peanut allergy it all got better but now he is a teenager he has other alllergies to pollen, grass, ...even his own sweat brings him in a rash! Shock
DD had asthma.
My mum has asthma.
DH's nephew has asthma and very bad eczema.

The list goes on!!! Paed was obviously interested by this and i wonder why... should have asked her there and then, but i wasn't thinking very straight at the time. Confused

Thanks.

Genie - (Controversial post alert) I don't see how they can be related seeing as Asthma is caused by breathing through your mouth instead of through your nose. (Google Buteyko method)

I did the buteyko method and totally cured my asthma.

The trouble is asthma medications is worth such a lot of money to the drug companies, that they will always be able to stop the NHS proving it. I mean no body stands to make a lot of money from the Buteyko method (besides the NHS) so nobody can fund the very expensive trials needed to approve it (in this country. It is approved in other countries.)

Hi Genie - yes I personally think so.
My ds (asd) has so many allergy symptoms (asthma, eczema, hives, hayfever etc...) these worsen depending on what food he eats or chemicals he is around (like cleaning products).
Also like your ds my son seems to have an allergy to his own sweat, it brings him out in hives and makes him scratch like crazy. Actually he doesn't sweat because anything that causes this like heat or exercise makes him so uncomfortable that he has to stop.

Also when my sons allergies worsen, so does his asd symptoms, but that could be because he is more miserable with the symptoms.

There is also a lot of allergies in our extended family.

DD might have ASD..she is also severely allergic to eggs, fish and nuts and has eczema.

If you google 'allergy-induced autism' and/or search the archives on MN you will find a whole host of info. I am convinced that Ds2's allergies have played a significant role in his autism. We also have many allergies and also some bowel disorders (IBS, Crohns) in the extended family.

TheLifeOfRiley · 21/08/2010 10:52

ds has ASD, asthma and excema and constipation/witholding/bowel issues.

I have hayfever, very mild asthma, excema, IBS (and should probably avoid wheat and dairy) Hmm and lots of ASD traits.

Sorry Pixie - I didn't mean to upset you. I am very sorry to hear how terrible Asthma is for you.

The Buteyko has helped lots and lots of people cure their asthma, including myself.

This SN board is a good place to find out about all softs of alternative therapies that the doctors don't tell you about.

Anybody who has Asthma, or their child has Asthma should do their own research on Buteyko method.

Now they know that the Buteyko method helped me and didn't help your DD, which is very useful info.

The buteyko method does not recommend breathing through your mouth instead of calling an ambulance. Just like ABA doesn't promise to have your child behaving properly straight away, and synthetic phonics doesn't promise to have your kid reading in 24 hours. It dosen't recommend cutting down on drugs in any way until your asthma is getting better and you need less drugs.

Are you saying the Buteyko method didn't work for your DD because she is unable to breathe through her nose? Or because she does breathe through her nose and still has asthma?

Anyway, I really didn't mean to upset you, and I'm sure you have tried everything. I am also sure that there will be some people reading this thread who won't have heard of the buteyko method and will be interested in it.

genieinabottle · 21/08/2010 12:47

Pixie, IndigoBell, i've never heard of the Buteyko method before.

I do not see the point where breathing through the nose? or mouth? or whatever... has anything to do with a possible ASD link (or not) to asthma and/or allergies.

I was thinking more along the lines of 'auto-immune problems' (not sure what the exact term is).

And i was merely asking a question, as the paed who assessed DS, was clearly interested in knowing about asthma and allergies within the extended family, and i was wondering why?

I'm sorry if my post has upset some of you.

Interesting thought. I have moderate asthma, allergies to animals, dust and pollen. DD and DS1 both have excema, and DS1 gets hives from fricking everything, to the point where I have given up trying to find out what it is and just treat the rash and then the inevitable impetigo because he picks. Sad

DD has a penicillin allergy too, but she is pretty NT.
