Hi

Our DD will be ready to start weaning in the next few weeks and i was wondering if anyone can recommend a good highchair? DD has Down's and I noticed that on a few of the retailer's reviews that parents with kids with SN commented on problems with their child slipping etc. In terms of her development she is classified as "normal" by the therapists and can now hold her head steady but cannot yet sit unaided.

Also if anyone has any good tips on foods to try first it would be appreciated! :)

Thanks

My DD was (and is) slightly hypotonic, which made her a little floppy in a highchair. I found that a fairly upright bouncy chair with a moses basket sheet over it to catch messy spills was better than a highchair when first weaning.

That's a great idea - thanks!!

We also used the bouncy chair at first and when DD1 (low tone and poor head control and didnt sit unaided until about 16 months) got too long we went for a high chair that could recline. Think it was Chicco Polly, had 3 back rest positions. Great highchair although bulky if having to move around ie to grans houses. She was in it until she was about 2 and a half when she just got too tall.
Good luck with the weaning.

OK - I'll Google it now.

Thanks!

We had a fisher price rainforest chair for DS which was really good with a bit of extra padding. My friend whose DS also has cp has an amazing chair from Mamas & Papas, don't know what it is called but check their website, I am quite jealous of it!

I was going to say Chicco high chair, it has different height positions, angles for the back, good straps and a central piece attached to the tray that goes between their legs as well as the strap, so really helps them not to slip.It is very bulhy though, and expensive, but mine is on it's thrid child and still looks like new (well if you ignor the food splattered on it!) I also used a cheap padded high chair insert, back, base and two flappy sides, to make dd really snug. When ds was first weaned we actually put him in his carry handled car seat for the first few months. You obviously mustn't leave them in for any length of time as their back is curved, but it was great for keeping her still, and we could prop it at a good angle for swallowing etc. Good luck, make sure you have your camera to hand, you are in for some fun. DGS has a Fisher price chair (rainforest) padded out with a bit of foam by OT. It has a central pillar so they cant slip through and is an excellent seating position for slightly floppy DGS with CP. Also 5 point harness.

Chicco Polly was excellent for dd (has severe hypotonia).

Also recommend asking your physio about loaning a Tumbleform - great if you're going to granny's house for example as more portable than the Chicco.
