Ideas on how to publicise this?

Because of DS2's ADHD I rarely take them to things like live theatre performances, I'd not be able to relax and I'd constantly be chasing DS2 around the place stopping him from running off or stimming loudly or any of the other behaviours he exhibits.

Others have said it's not my problem, that other theatre users should be understanding but unfortunately they are not, and DS2 can be disruptive. When people are paying upwards of £50 for a family ticket they are generally not understanding of disruption.

Anyway, I put this point to my local council, and said just how lovely it would be to go to a panto performance where actually if the kids wanted to hand flap, shout or wander around it wouldn't matter, because all the kids there would have additional needs and the parents there are in the same boat. They're also thinking of getting some makaton signers to attend too.

As a result there is a dedicated performance for families with members with additional needs scheduled in December. I'm being fully involved and consulted on things like publicity etc.

I need ideas on how to phrase the publicity, as the last thing I want to do is sound patronising iygwim!

I know of several clubs for kids with additional needs that I can contact, I'm leaving word with the local community paeds and the portage team and contacting the local special schools, so I know where I'm targetting the publicity, it's just the phrasing that I'm finding difficult.

The only thing I can think of is something like

Date Time Venue
Performance of Aladdin
for those with SN and their carers

which isn't exactly inspiring.

Any help would be appreciated!

That sounds an excellent idea Glitter. I do feel like writing to the GFT though and saying that not all children with autism are the same. Ds1 would prefer a well lit room and subtitles.

See this is it, Bullet.
I have today had a chat with our OT and she's suggested that 'refuge' areas are created immediately outside the actual theatre where the parents can take the kids for a few minutes if they're not coping, and a written guide for parents to highlight when there are going to be particularly bright visuals, large crowd scenes, loud noises etc, as it's not one size fits all.

I so want to make this work as if it does it'll happen every year.
