What a shame that where DS is about to start his assessment they use sing a long and not makaton as I've picked loads up from Something Special!.... Oh well.... What I wanted to know is where I might find a couple more Sign a long signs? I already use "again" "finished" "play" but want "listen" "look" and "let's go home / home" Where will I find them? We're being offered a workshop to learn some more but that won't be for a couple of months yet.
Thanks! x

you might find this explanation helps. My understanding is that the signs are mostly the same.

There is a high degree of overlap. Sign along state they 'sign for meaning' so for example they sign koala as 'australia bear' instead of a specific sign. Makaton signs link to the makaton symbols, usually straight BSL signs or ones adapted for lower levels of manaul dexterity, (no regional variations in sign along or makaton)

For example Makaton symbol for library involves picture of books and the generic building sign. the makaton sign breaks down as 'book book house'. The BSL sign is a specific sign for library, hope that helps...

Brill and not too expensive resources available from the Forest Bookshop, or possibly Forest books.com

Thanks for advice!! From what you've both said, I don't see any harm in picking up some of Justin's signs (isn't he fab btw! lol....) and using them, too. Right?

Early learning centre sell books, dvds on sing a long. Ds's teacher said that they have started to use this instead of makaton as it has more signs and they are constantly coming up with more so it makes it more versatile.

dd's school use sign a long, but she uses makaton as well. as she picks it up from SS and youth scheme.

Most school use sign along cos its cheaper than makaton (so I have been told) as makaton resources can be very expensive. If you are anywhere near the new forest you can actually visit the bookshop there, (it was like Aladdins cave!) and they have some stuff discounted, (I got a few bargins) As far as vocab, Makaton has (I believe) much more, as it has been going so much longer and their stuff does go to a much more complex level, but again its not cheap Sad

There is so much overlap at the less comples levels, and anyone working with a child one to one will use the signs they do, so it shouldn't make so much difference...

Good luck, and 'happy signing!'

The makaton bookshop sounds fabs but I can't justify takng a trip all the way down there just for that!
