Hi everyone,Im new to mumsnet and looking for help and advice. My 4yr son is in the process of getting a diagnosis for asd.His paed is quite certain he has Asperger's and urged us to apply for dla adament he was entitled to it.I have done this with help from our local council and it has been refused on reconsideration and now awaiting appeal. The decision maker seems to have ignored much of what has been detailed in the forms and decided that he has no issues other than needing speech therapy. This is despite including info from several reports.Anyone else had this issue???Im so frustrated, stressed and annoyed.
Any tips on how to be succesful at the appeal and also what to expect?

Hi floweredpig, DLA forms can be a bit of an 'art' and there are strict criteria for each element. Qualifying doesn't depend on what the diagnosis is, but what the care needs are.

Have you seen the cerebra guide to claiming DLA? It is very helpful. Perhaps you could look through it and see whether your form contained enough detail?

when i first applied start last year, it was refused, i didnt follow any guides, then 4 months later i decided to try again, and like lougle says i got a copy of cerebras guide to claiming dla, very informative, and goes through each question step by step, breaking down each question into sections and sub sections, i highly recommend this in helping you complete your forms. the 2nd time round ds was award high rate care, no mobility, but i was just so happy to get hrc. good luck
